LENDOIRO TALKS WITH CHELSEA ABOUT MAKAAY

Deportivo’s president Lendoiro has had talks with English club Chelsea about a
possible transfer of Depor’s striker Roy Makaay to the London team. It seems
that the president of Deportivo had this talks at the same time that he was
negotiating with Bayern Munich and Valencia.

However, there are big differences between the talks with Bayern and Valencia
on the one hand and with Chelsea on the other. And it looks to be that
Deportivo prefer Makaay to end up playing in England, and not in Germany or
Spain.

The new owner of Chelsea is the Russian millionaire Roman Abramovich, who is
prepared to do a great financial effort to get a stronger team for next season.
And he has the money to do it. As Bayern Munich have made an offer for Makaay
of 15 (or 18) million Euro and Valencia an offer of 12 million, the London team
could do a better one.

Lendoiro isn’t very happy with the methods used by the German club and
Valencia, because they discusses terms with Makaay before approaching Deportivo
for a transfer. So far Chelsea haven’t talked to Makaay yet, and this is
important to Lendoiro.

It may be that Bayern’s vicepresident Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has encountered a
big obstacle with the name Lendoiro to get Makaay out of La Coruna, as the
German is starting to understand that Lendoiro isn’t a novice in the world of
negotiations. Last week Lendoiro told Bayern that Deportivo had an offer of
Barcelona, Valencia and another club on the table. The German delegation
assumed he was bluffing, but now Bayern will feel the pressure of Chelsea.

At Chelsea they tried, without much luck, to sign Henry (Arsenal), Vieri
(Inter) and Kluivert (Barcelona). All bids were rejected, and now Makaay has
become the main target to strengthen the team. Today Lendoiro will travel to
Madrid to have a meeting with the G-13 clubs, and there he could negotiate
again with Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld laughed at the possibility of including
Hasan Salihamidzic in a deal for Makaay. “They should give us 30 million Euro
for him”, he said. “We’re in a good position at the moment, because we
already have enough quality strikers. And we don’t like to play poker games,
with Deportivo pressuring us. I already am preparing the team for next season,
without Roy Makaay in it”.
