Wang hits rough patch in debut with Syracuse Chiefs

The previously smooth comeback of Chien-Ming Wang hit its first small bump
Tuesday night.

Wang, recovering from a shoulder injury that put his once-promising career
on a long hiatus, gave up seven hits and three runs in 5 2/3 innings in the
Syracuse Chiefs’ 4-3, 12-inning win at Alliance Bank Stadium.

Wang labored for most of the contest, walking one, striking out four and
allowing at least one baserunner in each of his full innings. He threw 91
pitches, 62 for strikes. According to the ABS radar gun he exceeded 90 mph
a handful of times, and he maintained that speed into his final inning.

“Overall, I feel fine,’’ he said through an interpreter. “The first
couple of innings, the velocity wasn’t that good. The location was high.
You have to be a professional. You have to pitch the ball well.’’

The Chiefs won the game on a sacrifice fly from Brian Bixler that brought
home Seth Bynum from third.

Wang hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2009 because of his shoulder
ailments. The Taiwan native was 55-26 with a 4.16 ERA in 109 games during
his career with New York Yankees from 2005 to 2009. In 2006 he finished
second in American League Cy Young voting after a 19-6 season with a 3.63 ERA.

He is scheduled to make one more start with Syracuse, Sunday at
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The outing Tuesday was by far the worst in Wang’s rehab tour. In his
previous four starts amongst Class-A Hagerstown, Class A-Advanced Potomac
and Double-A Harrisburg he was 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA and in 18 innings had
allowed 13 hits, two runs and two walks while striking out eight.

“I feel normal. It’s just one game,’’ he said. “Hopefully, the next
game will be better. I just need to make my adjustments for the next game.’’

Wang was a control pitcher at his peak but he battled with high location
early Tuesday. In the first inning Buffalo centerfielder Jesus Feliciano,
the second batter of the game, drilled a 1-0 pitch over the right field
fence. Wang then plunked the next batter, third baseman Zach Lutz, in the
head with a 90 mph fastball.

In the second, Wang allowed one-out singles to outfielder Bubba Bell and
catcher Raul Chavez, but wriggled out of trouble without surrendering a run.
He wasn’t so lucky in the third.

With Syracuse up 2-1, Feliciano led off with a single and took second on
a fielder’s choice. First baseman Valentino Pascucci singled to drive in
Feliciano and tie the game, left fielder Jason Botts doubled and second
baseman Luis Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly to score Pascucci with the
go-ahead run.

“He came out today, he realized he’s getting really close. I think he was
trying to get a feel for his sinker,’’ said Chiefs manager Randy Knorr.
“He’s really getting himself in shape. When you are coming back from that
long out, you have good starts, and some that aren’t so good. I’m really
looking forward to his next start.’’

The Bisons threatened to add another in the fourth, but Chiefs center fielder
Corey Brown had Wang’s back. With two outs and a runner on third, Feliciano
lashed a shot to right-center. Brown laid out to his backhand side to make a
sensational catch just above the grass tops and end the threat.

Wang’s international appeal boosted interested at the gate and in the press
box. Pockets of Taiwanese fans dotted a few sections and the Chiefs issued
credentials to 15 media members from that nation.

“It really means a lot, all the cheers,’’ Wang said of the crowd.
“I still want to become a big pitcher over there.’’
