Our development squad came from behind to start the inaugural Premier
League 2 season with a creditable draw away at last term's runners-up.


Sunderland took the lead in an even contest through Joel Asoro just after
the hour mark but an own goal from Daniel Wright restored parity shortly
afterwards. The visitors had chances to win it late on but were forced to
settle for an opening weekend point on their travels.


Adi Viveash named a youthful starting line-up to begin the first game of
the inaugural Premier League 2 campaign, the league competition that has
replaced the Under-21 Premier League, with the age eligibility increased
by two years.

Six of the starters are still eligible to play for our youth team, aged 17
or younger, including Ike Ugbo who led the line up front supported by
Dujon Sterling, Kyle Scott and Mason Mount. Charlie Colkett and Josimar
Quintero provided the experience to the team in midfield, while Nathan
Baxter began in goal protected by a back four of captain Fankaty Dabo,
Joseph Colley, Trevoh Chalobah and Jay Dasilva.


The Black Cats have been strong at this age group in recent years,
finishing second and fourth in the last two seasons, and they started well
in the north-east. Asoro, the Swedish striker, was an early threat and he
provided the first effort of the game with a low strike that was pulled
narrowly wide of the far post.


Asoro then tested his countryman Colley into making a crucial block to
prevent the forward working Baxter. Down the other end, Colkett fired a
free-kick just over the bar after Sterling was fouled in a challenge that
resulted in an early booking for Michael Ledger, the centre-back.


Jordan Pickford, the England Under-21 goalkeeper who played alongside
Nathaniel Chalobah, Lewis Baker, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, John Swift and Kasey
Palmer in the summer's Toulon Tournament triumph, was alert and quick off
his line midway through the half to smother the ball at the feet of Ugbo
after Mount's tame drive fell kindly for our number nine.


Despite fashioning a healthy number of opportunities, the hosts were
unable to seriously trouble Baxter in the opening period. Asoro continued
to cause problems but fired over and then wide after good initial
individual work. Elliot Embleton had the half's best chance in stoppage
time but got underneath the ball and steered it over.


Miro Muheim replaced Colkett at the break after a first-half knock for the
midfielder, which allowed Mount to operate from a more central area and
Scott to drop deeper. It helped the visitors to assert a control of
possession in the opening quarter of an hour in the second period but it
was Sunderland who broke the deadlock against the run of play after 61
minutes.


Baxter's pass out was weak and pounced upon by Asoro, who made no mistake
this time in finding the back of the net to open the scoring. It was harsh
on Viveash's side, who were enjoying their best period of the game at that
point but they were handed a similar gift to draw the scores level nine
minutes later.


A loose forward pass down the left appeared to be harmless but Daniel
Wright was harried into making a quick decision and his pass back to
Pickford was awry. The ball had little pace on it but the goalkeeper could
do little as it trickled towards goal and eventually over the line for the
leveller.


Both sides sensed they could snatch the three points in the final 20
minutes but it was Chelsea who carved out the two best chances. Colley
went close with a header from Mount's driven corner that arrowed just the
wrong side of the post before Ugbo was denied by Pickford following
Dasilva's dangerous delivery, ensuring the points were shared.

game against Liverpool on Monday 22 August, live on Chelsea TV.

Our development squad came from behind to pick up a creditable point on
their travels in the north-east at the weekend as they drew 1-1 with last
term's runners-up Sunderland.


A goal from Joel Asoro put the hosts in front just after the hour mark but
the Blues responded strongly and were handed the equaliser through a
Daniel Wright own goal. Both Joseph Colley and Ike Ugbo went close to
snatching a late winner but manager Adi Viveash reflected afterwards on a
pleasing start to the new season from his players.



'It was a terrific game to start the season,' Viveash told the official
Chelsea website. 'I'm really pleased with a lot of individual things and
our players are sure to learn so much each week if every game in this
league is like that. That's what development is all about.


'We conceded at quite a difficult time because that was our best period in
the game but our response to go again and equalise was very impressive. We
fully deserved the equaliser and probably deserved to win the game in the
end.'


A misplaced pass out from goalkeeper Nathan Baxter and miscommunication
between him and defender Fankaty Dabo led to the Black Cats opening the
scoring but Viveash was unconcerned about the rare error and instead
focused on the reaction of his two young players.


'It's an unfortunate mistake for the goal but if you choose to be a team
that plays out from the back then sometimes there are going to be
mistakes. The most important thing is what you do after it and I was very
impressed with the mental attitude of both Nathan and Fankaty in how they
refocused quickly.


'The intensity of the game was good and both teams gave their lot but we
came really strong physically at the end. For such a young group, our
fitness throughout was very good. Every player contributed and worked
tremendously hard. It's a result that gives us a lot of belief in the work
we're doing day-in, day-out to improve.'


The development squad return to action in Premier League 2 next Monday 22
August with a home game against Liverpool at Aldershot. Before then, Jody
Morris's youth team travel to Southampton in the Under-18 Premier League.
The youngsters were 3-2 winners over Fulham in their season opener on
Saturday.
