Under-18s report: Chelsea 3 Fulham 2
Sat 13 Aug 2016
Chelsea Under-18s kicked off the new campaign with three points after
victory over Fulham at Cobham this morning (Saturday).
Goals from Harvey St Clair and Martell Taylor-Crossdale placed us in
control after half an hour before Fulham pulled one back before the break
through Jayden Harris. St Clair added a third midway through the second
half but Harris netted again to ensure a nervous finale.
Jody Morris, stepping up from assistant last term to take charge of the
youth team this season, named six new scholars in his starting line-up for
the season opener. Taylor-Crossdale led the line up front after a prolific
pre-season campaign and he was supported in attack by St Clair, George
McEachran and new signing Charlie Brown.
Jamie Cumming started in goal protected by a back four of captain Josh
Grant, Richard Nartey, Cole Dasilva and Reece James. Luke McCormick
partnered Tariq Uwakwe in midfield.
The Blues went 15 games unbeaten at home last campaign and they asserted
that dominance in the early stages of the local derby. Brown, a summer
acquisition from Ipswich Town, had the ball in the back of the net early
on but was denied a debut goal by the linesman's flag.
Visiting goalkeeper Taye Ashby-Hammond was busy in the opening 15 minutes,
pushing over a shot from the lively St Clair before controlling his
six-yard box well to claw clear a number of dangerous corners.
He was helpless though as St Clair opened the scoring with a brilliant
free-kick. The winger travelled infield from the left flank and was caught
late by the defender's tackle. He stepped up swiftly to curl a
right-footed effort beyond the goalkeeper's despairing dive.
Morris's side doubled their advantage 10 minutes later with a similarly
unstoppable effort. St Clair was again at the centre of the danger,
carrying the ball forward with purpose before handing over to
Taylor-Crossdale. The 16-year-old striker did the rest, advancing towards
goal before unleashing a strike with power and accuracy that flew into the
far corner.
Uwakwe fired over and Taylor-Crossdale had a legitimate penalty appeal
waved away before Ashby-Hammond produced an excellent flying save to tip
St Clair's rising drive over the crossbar. It proved to be a pivotal
moment as Fulham reduced the deficit nine minutes before the interval. A
quick break caught the Blues outnumbered and Harris was afforded the time
and space to curl an effort into the top corner past Cumming.
The visitors ended the first period in the ascendancy and the break came
at a good time for the Blues to regroup and settle. They restarted
brightly with efforts from McCormack and Dasilva before Brown was denied
with a smart save after advancing from the right flank.
Skipper Grant was required to make a crucial intervention in his own
18-yard box as a rejuvenated Fulham threatened but our attacking prowess
and speed on the break was always likely to cause problems as the game
progressed.
Taylor-Crossdale prodded over from close range following an excellent
delivery by James before St Clair capped an impressive display with a
second goal. The ball ricocheted kindly into his path and it was an
invitation the Scottish youth international would not pass up, striking
his finish low and sweet into the bottom corner.
It was a goal that ought to have settled the contest but another brilliant
individual effort from Harris meant the final 10 minutes were nervy and
tense, with Fulham pushing us back and sending set-pieces into the penalty
area. Dasilva cleared a looping header off the line late on to ensure the
new season opened with all three points.
The youngsters return to action in the Under-18 Premier League next
weekend with a trip to Southampton. Before then, our development squad
take on Sunderland in their Premier League 2 opener tomorrow (Sunday). The
away game kicks off at 12.05pm and there will be updates throughout on our

Under-18s reaction: Room for improvement
Sat 13 Aug 2016
Chelsea Under-18s claimed an opening day victory in the Under-18 Premier
League but manager Jody Morris saw plenty of room for improvement after an
entertaining 3-2 win.
Goals from Harvey St Clair and Martell Taylor-Crossdale gave us a two-goal
lead before Fulham pulled one back before half-time. St Clair struck again
midway through the second period but the visitors reduced the deficit
again and ensured a tense finale to Morris's first game in charge of the
youngsters.
After the game, he reflected on an excellent start but claimed there were
lessons to be learned from the morning's work.
'It's a win but we feel a bit frustrated because we started the game so
well and in the first half hour I thought we were excellent,' he told the
official Chelsea website. 'We kept them pinned in their half, were moving
the ball quickly and had total control so to be 2-0 up was just rewards
really.
'Yet we ended the half a little shaky and looked quite vulnerable on the
counter-attack where certain players were not recognising their roles when
we had attacking set-pieces. During a game, you need to see that and learn
from those mistakes but I don't think we did that.
'We got our confidence hit a little bit and then the second half was just
quite sloppy from both teams.'
Morris admitted that coming under pressure brought the best out of some of
his defensive unit but claimed his team needed to be more clinical in
finishing the game off down the other end.
'We have to be better at killing teams off,' he said. 'We got ourselves
into some really good positions in the final third but we either chose the
wrong pass or the quality of the cross or finish was missing. That's been
a bit of a theme for us in pre-season and again today we should have had
the game done and dusted.
'It was good to see some of the defensive performances and I thought Josh
Grant especially was very good in the second half when we were under
pressure. George McEachran's work-rate in midfield was also outstanding.
'Some of the things we talked about before the game and again at half-time
were not really addressed on the pitch so of course we're pleased with the
win but there's a sense of frustration that we could have done a bit
better.'
