Woody Allen once said that his greatest regret in life was that he was not somebody else. I can't remember if he specified exactly who it is he wished he was; Marlon Brando, probably, knowing Woody. I know what he means. In fact, sometimes I think I wouldn't mind being Woody Allen. If one has to lgo through life being thin and weedy and unattractive, then one might as well go the whole hog and be a freak and a genius as well. Actually, if I were given the chance to be somebody else, or rather to start all over again, then there is no better way of preparing for a career as a writer than spending a year or two as a top international sports star. A golfer preferably or a tennis player—some game in which I could wear flattering clothes and not get hurt. Then, when I'd won the big one, Wimbledon or the open, I'd write a no-holds barred estselling autobiography and launch myself into a long and successful career writing thrillers.
