RESERVE REPORT: NEWCASTLE UNITED 2 CHELSEA 4
Posted on: Tue 20 Mar 2012
== Summary ==
Chelsea's reserves were comfortable winners in the north-east on Tuesday
night, with Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku netting twice.
The youngster, was has found first-team opportunities limited since Didier
Drogba's return from the African Nations, struck an early penalty to put
Chelsea in front after the Newcastle goalkeeper had brought him down, only
for the hosts to level on a rare attack against a strong Chelsea side.
Nathaniel Chalobah headed the Blues back in front before the break, and a
quickfire double after half-time, one from Billy Clifford and another from
Lukaku put the result beyond doubt.
Newcastle did pull a goal back in injury time through Jeff Henderson, but
the three points return south with the Blues.
There was more good news in the form of a return to action for forward
Adam Phillip, who had not appeared since the first game of the season
having suffered cruciate ligament damage. He was a second-half substitute.
== Team news ==
Coach Dermot Drummy was able to call upon Lukaku in attack, which meant a
switch it wide right for January signing Patrick Bamford, who has shown
promise in his early outings.
Elsewhere Chalobah featured in central midfield while Sam Hutchinson
captained from central defence. On the bench after long-term injury was
Phillip. Absent was Jacob Mellis, who it was announced on Tuesday has left
the club by mutual consent with immediate effect.
Newcastle featured a young side but spearheaded by first-teamer Nile
Ranger, who is recovering from a foot injury.
== First half ==
Chelsea should have been ahead inside the first five minutes as Lukaku
twice found himself in goalscoring opportunities, the first after Aziz
Deen-Conteh had crossed accurately to the edge of the six-yard box from
the left, only for the forward to head over, and the second after the
Belgian had outmuscled and outpaced his marker but found the home
goalkeeper, Jak Alnwick, quickly off his line to block.
A fine passing move on the edge of the Newcastle area saw Lucas Piazon's
shot deflected behind for a corner, and shortly afterwards George Saville
fired over following a corner.
Early pressure looked bound to pay off though, and it did just that after
17 minutes when Lukaku beat Alnwick to a loose ball, and the goalkeeper
clipped his legs sending the forward to the ground. Lukaku dusted himself
off and sent the spot kick hard and low into the bottom corner.
A Newcastle break presented Ranger with a golden opportunity to level five
minutes later but he hesitated and allowed Jamal Blackman to save at his
feet.
That aside, an equaliser looked unlikely but when Ranger found space on
the edge of the area and squared for Donaldson the striker made no mistake
firing low into the far corner past the helpless Blackman, just before the
half-hour mark.
Until that point Chelsea had enjoyed much of the possession and territory
but had struggled to carve out many more clear chances after the
impressive opening. When one came, Chalobah headed accurately home from
close range following Billy Clifford's to restore the lead. There were
five minutes before half-time.
Lukaku nearly added another with a tidy flick after Bamford had pulled
back, only for a Newcastle player to block the goal-bound effort, and then
Bamford himself cut in from the right, where he had had a quiet evening,
bending just wide with his left foot, the last kick of the half.
== Second half ==
A Conor Clifford challenge denied Ranger the half's first chance and it
would prove vital, as Chelsea quickly doubled the lead.
Lukaku sent right-back Kane away down the wing and he outpaced his marker,
squaring across goal for the incoming Billy Clifford to slot home.
It was a mad couple of minutes for Newcastle, as Bamford very nearly made
it four immediately, seeing his effort cleared off the line after rounding
Alnwick, but Lukaku then did find the net to take the Blues beyond reach
before the hour mark.
Lukaku brought another save from Alnwick and Blackman prevented Newcastle
sub Daniel Taylor one on one before then saving from a point-blank Ranger
header.
Five minutes from time the goalkeeper went one better, keeping out the
striker again with a full-length palm away to his left, and added another
stop to his scrapbook with a push into the ground after Ranger once again
headed at goal. Chelsea had been the better side, but tallying up
Blackman's saves suggested the hosts might be feeling a little aggrieved
not to be within touching distance.
It was disappointing then that the last goal of the night did come from
Newcastle, when a wide free-kick was not dealt with and the quickest to
react to a loose ball inside the area was Jeff Henderson who prodded home.
Still, a 4-2 win after a long journey north is not to be sniffed at, and
Drummy returns south a happy man after a largely impressive display from
his charges.
'The boys performed admirably, were motivated, kept trying to play and
worked hard,' he told Chelsea TV. 'When Hutch went off we dropped deep
which suited the long ball, but George Saville was winning headers and
learned very quickly.
'Rom is fantastic and comes down from the first team squad, gives 100 per
cent and his movement gets us up and out. Todd Kane's run and
intelligence for Billy's goal was great. It was to and fro in the second
half, so we have to look at how we defend. I was really pleased with Jamal
in goal.'
