YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 2 BRISTOL CITY 0
Posted on: Sat 17 Mar 2012
Following the victory at Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup first leg
on Friday night, a young Academy side were comfortable 2-0 winners against
Bristol City at Cobham on Saturday morning.
With a large proportion of players missing, the rearranged game, which had
been due to take place at Bristol, allowed opportunities for a number of
schoolboys to display their talent, and they did so with a controlling
performance.
Also missing was youth team coach Adi Viveash, who was replaced on the day
by Under 16 coach Joe Edwards, who was pleased with the afternoon's work.
'We agreed it would be an Under 17 game because of the youth game on
Friday night, and Bristol City kindly agreed to come and play at Cobham
and make it a combined Under 16s and 18s game, which really helped us, so
we were playing for points,' he explained.
'When you get into the later rounds of the Youth Cup you have to put a lot
of time and effort into the planning, but it's important to maintain the
programme of the scholars who aren't involved and need games - with that
in mind there were five or six that needed game time and a few Under 15s
and 16s who could get some competitive football.'
Bristol City sat deep with a 4-5-1 formation, making themselves difficult
to break down, with Chelsea having a lot of the ball and playing neat
football in the opening stages.
The first goal came from an Ismail Seremba corner inside the opening 20
minutes, as centre-back Dion Conroy, and Under 16, headed home, only to
receive a dead leg shortly afterwards, forcing him off. That meant captain
Alistair Gordon dropped into defence with substitute George Cole replacing
him in holding midfield.
Despite controlling the game, Chelsea's tempo slowed towards half-time as
we struggled to carve out more opportunities, but as Bristol City came
forward more in the second half, it opened up spaces for Chelsea's pacy
attackers to create problems for the visitors.
Mitchell Beeney in goal was allowed a quiet afternoon, and it was from
another set-piece that central defender, Under 16 John Muleba converted
the second goal, making it a very impressive weekend for the Academy.
