開始靜坐之後,首先要面對的是念頭的處理。
念頭起伏是吾人腦部運作的正常現象,人只要有腦部活動,就會有念頭產生,
所以,念頭不必抑制,也不可能消滅。
念頭就是念頭,不必分「淨念」或「妄念」。
靜坐中會覺得念頭特別多,其實不是因為靜坐造成念頭增加,
而是因為靜坐使得身體的基本感覺活化了,所以特別可以察覺到念頭的起伏生滅。
有的佛家方法教人攝心一句佛號或咒語,用一句佛號(淨念)來驅除其他雜念(妄念),
認為如此可以得到「心一境性」而入定,不過用這種近似於「洗腦」的方法,
最後很難把這一句佛號(咒語)拋掉,如果拋不掉,就成為法執,
靜坐的工夫也很難更上一層樓。吾師說:「念頭專一,會造成意識的收歛。」
「意識收歛」容易造成心血管的壓力而產生疾病。所以再三強調意識要鬆放。
對於念頭的理解,可以用「秋風掃落葉」來比喻說明。
人的念頭好比落葉,葉子未落之前,是生長在樹上,樹就好比是人的腦部。
腦部活動就像樹葉的新陳代謝一般,所以老葉會凋落,嫩葉會滋生。
靜坐中的念頭紛飛,是因為靜坐可以活化腦部的作用,加速意識的新陳代謝,
所以吾師說:「靜坐中的雜念有一點像做夢的機制,可以經由雜念的沉澱而
拋掉一些煩惱」、這和高忠憲的「默然靜去」的方法是互通的。
吾人如何察覺到念頭?這個察覺的作用,其實是「風」的自然作用,
如果秋風不起,落葉不會繽紛。「風」係指「業風」,
佛家說:「業風興識浪」,
這個「業風」的「業」就是「造作」,
人因為有造作的行為動機,所以引發念頭的起伏。
如果稍微注意一下,會發現靜坐中出現的念頭,大部份都是心中的未竟之事,
也就是吾人潛意識或下意識中所掛念的事情。這些「業」在靜坐的過程中,
以念頭的形式在腦海中運作,有的被強化(記憶加深),有的被排除(遺忘),
這就是心意識的自然作用,也是靜坐可以逐漸減輕,甚至消除煩惱的原理。
潘遊龍的<笑禪錄>中有一則:「某守財奴靜坐,一日忽然對老妻說:『禪師
教我靜坐真好,張三欠我一文錢,終於讓我想到了。』」
這就是靜坐中念頭的作用。
吾人對於「秋風掃落葉」的理解,最重要的是要清楚「風」的本質是什麼?
眾所週知,「風」是空氣的流動所造成的,然而,空氣雖然實有,卻是無形無象,
無以明狀,難以捉摸。靜坐要體會的,就是這個「感知不到」的存在。
「所覺」的是「落葉」,「能覺」的是「秋風」,秋風不動,落葉不起。
但這兩個再怎麼尋伺,也還是落在現象上打轉,
禪語錄上的「飃飃黃葉止兒啼」就在說明這個道理。
所以說,如果坐到樹長不出葉子來(腦中無念),此謂「了無生趣」,
就是禪宗所呵斥的「枯木倚寒巖」,錯用了工夫。
吾師說:「真正在靜坐的本體,是那個背後感知不到的在靜坐。」
六祖慧能說:「慧能沒技倆,不斷百思想,對境心數起,菩提做麼長?」
知道了「誰在靜坐」,才算是靜坐有了一點點基礎。
