PL2 report: Man City 2 Chelsea 2
Sat 26 Nov 2016
Our development squad showed great character in twice coming from behind
to pick up a point on their travels in Manchester this afternoon
(Saturday).
Lukas Nmecha had broken the deadlock on the stroke of half-time for Man
City with a deft finish before Ike Ugbo levelled almost instantly after
the restart with a similar, predatory close-range effort.
However, City found a response and substitute Thierry Ambrose fired them
back in front before Cameron Humphreys saw red late on. That set the scene
for the Blues to steal a point as Mason Mount found the back of the net
with 89 minutes on the clock.
A dozen of the 22 starters in the north-west had lined up in the same
stadium seven months previously when our youth team secured a 1-0
first-leg win in the FA Youth Cup final, with eight of those featuring for
the visitors including the front four as Adi Viveash reverted to a 4-2-3-1
shape.
Ugbo led the line up front supported by the trio of Dujon Sterling, Isaac
Christie-Davies and Mount, the latter having netted the only goal in that
first-leg victory. Bradley Collins returned between the sticks following
the involvement of a host of first-team players during Monday's league win
over Southampton, with captain Fankaty Dabo, Fikayo Tomori, Trevoh
Chalobah and Jay Dasilva lining up across the back four. Kyle Scott
partnered Mukhtar Ali in anchoring the Blues midfield.
City matched our system and both sides cancelled each other out during an
uneventful opening to the encounter. While technically proficient and
tactically intriguing, it took until the 26th minute before either team
had a strike at goal as Paolo Fernandes's deflected effort flew over
following some bright approach play.
That seemed to breathe some much-needed life into the action and Tosin
Adarabioyo defended well to divert the ball behind as the advancing
Dasilva's searching cross looked for attackers in the area. The subsequent
corner was comfortably dealt with by the hosts before goalkeeper Billy
O'Brien made the first save of the afternoon, going to ground smartly to
collect Christie-Davies's drive from 25 yards out.
Collins snuffed out the danger as a bouncing ball among bodies in the
18-yard box threatened to cause problems but the stopper could do little
about the goal that broke the deadlock in the final minute of the half.
Aleix Garcia's deflected free-kick failed to trouble the 19-year-old but
the Spaniard's floated corner was more dangerous and Lukas Nmecha found
space to divert the ball inside the far post.
Both managers made changes at the interval, with Jacob Maddox and Josimar
Quintero introduced to proceedings for the visitors, and Viveash's boys
were level three minutes into the restart. A corner from the right was
headed down by the rising Chalobah and Ugbo made enough contact to flick
the loose ball over the line for his seventh strike of the campaign.
The Blues enjoyed their brightest period of the game in the 15 minutes
that opened the second period, with Ugbo's low strike the most notable
opportunity for us to take the lead. As it transpired, the hosts came
through the difficult period before firing themselves back in front just
after the hour mark.
Dabo had hooked the ball off the line and Chalobah headed clear before
Isaac Buckley escaped at the far post to nod the ball invitingly into the
path of the unmarked Ambrose, City's half-time substitute. The forward was
afforded an abundance of time to pick his spot and ripple the back of the
net from six yards.
It was nearly 3-1 moments later as Ambrose threatened to put the game to
bed, running clear in behind and latching on to a clever ball over the
top. Collins was the man who kept his side in the contest, intervening to
make a crucial save to push the ball inches past the far post.
Quintero had made a lively impact in midfield, hassling City players in
possession and regularly winning the ball back for his side. He received a
pass from Dasilva as the Blues looked for a second equaliser but his
instant low shot was watched comfortably wide by City's defenders.
Simon Davies's side were reduced to 10 men with 13 minutes remaining as
Cameron Humphreys picked up a second booking. Sterling was the man on the
turf as the defender left the field, his mazy run from right-back having
drawn the foul. Mount stepped up to take aim with the set-piece but his
well-hit effort was gathered confidently by O’Brien.
The points remained up for grabs in the final exchanges as we tried to
make our numerical advantage count. It looked as if they were slipping
away from us until Mount struck in the final minute of normal time,
steering the ball expertly inside the near post following Dasilva's low
centre. The result sees Viveash's side move up to fourth in the Premier
League 2 table.
