Under-18s report: Fulham 0 Chelsea 2
Sat 26 Nov 2016
Our Under-18s made it four wins in a row but had to wait until late to
find the breakthrough in the west London derby at Fulham.
Despite Chelsea enjoying the majority of possession and the woodwork being
rattled at both ends, the match was goalless until two late goals by Luke
McCormick and Martell Taylor-Crossdale gave the Blues all three points.
There was plenty of action in the opening stages, though, with Fulham
defender Moritz Jenz diverting Taylor-Crossdale's low cross onto his own
crossbar after just three minutes.
The Blues suffered an early set-back when Tariq Uwakwe was forced off with
an injury after only five minutes, being replaced by Juan Castillo after
picking up a knock defending a free-kick in our box in the opening minute.
We continued to pile on the early pressure despite the enforced change,
with Cole Dasilva and McCormick both shooting narrowly wide, and a
deflection just preventing Conor Gallagher from opening the scoring.
The first save came from Fulham's Taye Ashby-Hammond after 25 minutes,
tipping a low drive from the edge of the box by Taylor-Crossdale around
the post. The home side came into the game more as the first half went on,
and had to clear off the line after a Chelsea corner dropped on the edge
of the six yard box calling chaos, but there was no breakthrough before
half-time.
There were more injury problems for Chelsea at the start of the second
half, with Dasilva and Harvey St Clair both having to leave the field for
treatment before the latter was forced off, being replaced by George
McEachran.
Fulham started to pose more of a threat, with Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson
looking dangerous on the left, forcing a save from Jamie Cumming after
cutting in from the wing and hitting the crossbar with an almost identical
effort a minute later.
However, it was the Blues who found the net, breaking the deadlock with
just five minutes remaining. Good work on the right allowed Reece James to
find the touchline and cutting the ball back to Charlie Brown near the
penalty spot. Brown's effort hit the post and rebounded across goal, where
McCormick was waiting to drive the ball into the goal.
Fulham couldn't find a late fightback and we added to our tally in injury
time. It was all of Taylor-Crossdale's making, as he turned his marker out
wide and drove towards goal. When he was cynically tripped just outside
the area, he got up and promptly converted the free-kick himself, curling
the ball in off the far post to make the win safe.
