Matt Cronin's Women's Final Pick
Saturday, September 8, 2007
By Matt Cronin
1-JUSTINE HENIN V. 4-SVETLANA KUZNETOSOVA
I picked against Henin in two straight matches against the Williams sisters
and she made me pay in a big way. She was spectacular in both contests,
hitting with more authority than we've ever seen from the little Belgian on
the grounds and rarely backing off the ball. She knew she had to be
super-aggressive and was, which is much easier said than done for a woman who
grew up as a defensive player.
Now she can be offensive with every shot and combine that with her quickness,
creativity and intelligence and you have the best player in the world.
She's a heavy favorite against Kuznetsova, whom she's 14-2 against. She has
much more variety and nerves that rarely fray. Certainly, the Russian can run
with her and trade forehands winners, but she's overmatched from the backhand
side, and doesn't volley or serve as well.
The one positive for Sveta is that she beat Henin in Berlin the last time the
two played in May. Kuznetsova can grind and her inside out forehand is one of
the tour's best. She knows that on a great day, she can hang in rallies with
Henin, but does she have the inner belief to go for big shots on one of the
world's biggest stages against a player she knows if better than she is? No,
she doesn't, which is why Henin will win her second US Open crown in straight
sets.
