15/12/2006:
PARIS Roland Garros - With no tennis racquet in hand Justine crossed the
hallways of her favorite tournament. There is absolute silence, and calm. No
audience, noise of balls, or sign of spectacle. Justine was desginated
Champion For Sport in the universal crusade to fight doping in sports today.
She is the first women to be given the title, and succeeds five other
international athletes of eminence - French Judoka David Soft, German F-1's
Michael Schumacher, Russian hockey player Vyacheslav Fetisov, the Brazilian
football legend Pele, and Ukrainian pole vaulter Serguei Bubka
"There is perhaps less doping in tennis than other sports, but there was a
case, it's already here. While being named ambassadress for sport by UNESCO,
I will be able to speak about it in a more open way. I always want to win,
but in a clean way. It is very important to teach young people because at
their tender age even if a sporting career is a goal, life is another goal.
They should not destroy their life to win; it's better to win smaller medals."
- Justine
Director-General of UNESCO, Koichiro Matsuura honoured the #1 tennis player an
appointment because of her principals in excellence, fair play and integrity.
"It's really a great honor for me, I am very proud to be granted this
distinction. I was nervous today. I'm not use to such prestigious and big
protocal, but I was received in truly familiar surroundings," Justine told the
gathering of international journalists after the ceremony.
Justine regularly receives awards off the courts, but this one is very special
Justine explained. "I've experience many incredible moments on court, but
today there's great emotions off court. For once there's no talk about my
one handed backhand or my beautiful rallies, but about what I can convey.
It's more about the individual character, and I am very touched because I may
play tennis, but above all I want to be a good person".
The afternoon sojourn to Phillipe Chatrier on December ended as in the usual
manner during spring for Justine - a shy smile on her face, and more rarefied
memories.
