Clarifying Chien-Ming Wang’s free agent status

Yesterday, we heard that right-hander, Chien-Ming Wang, was poised to sign
a $2 million contract (plus incentives) with the Washington Nationals.
However, those reports have since been disputed, causing a certain level
of confusion with regards to Wang’s free agent status. Today, though,
Wang’s agent, Alan Nero, spoke to the NY Post and clarified his client’s
current market position. “We are a week to 10 days away before a final
decision,” noted Nero. “A couple of teams have been very aggressive
and are far ahead. We are not going to do a contract pending a physical.
A couple of teams have made offers.” So, Wang’s status is still somewhat
organic, although the Nationals seem to be the final landing spot for him.
Wherever he ends up, he is not expected to crack a starting rotation until
May, at the earliest.

For those hoping to see the Yankees make an eleventh hour push to re-sign
Wang, GM Brian Cashman did his best to curb those thoughts yesterday.
“We would have loved to have him back,” said Cashman, “but due to the
risk of shoulder surgery, I only offered a minor league contract with major
league terms if he gets back to health.” Despite a published report from
earlier in the offseason which claimed the Yankees would match offers for
the Taiwanese pitcher in order to retain him, the organization never
seemed all that eager to re-sign Wang after non-tendering him, as legitimate
payroll concerns understandably clashed with legitimate injury concerns.
In 7-10 days, sadly, our one-time ace will sign elsewhere – probably with
Washington – and will officially close his notable tenure with the Yankees.
