DAVID LUIZ EXCLUSIVE: My debt to Didier... I was crocked for Champions
League final but he made me believe I was fit, now I'm out to ruin his day
By Craig Hope - PUBLISHED: 11:23 GMT, 26 February 2014
When David Luiz tore his hamstring in the FA Cup semi-final of 2012 it was
taken for granted his season was over.
The injury meant he would play no part as Chelsea chased a Champions
League and FA Cup double. Didier Drogba, however, was not subscribing to
any such theory.
Five weeks later Luiz and the inspirational Ivorian were scoring
penalty-kicks as the Blues lifted their first Champions League trophy
following a shootout victory over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
Had it not been for Drogba, however, the Brazilian would never have played
in the final nor collected a winners' medal.
Scoring during the semi-final victory over Barcelona and forcing
extra-time with a late equaliser against Bayern, Drogba's influence is the
stuff of legend.
Luiz, though, has revealed for the first time that is was a motivational
one-on-one with his team-mate which aided his healing process and saw him
passed fit for the final.
‘I remember before the final I had a big, big injury and had not played
(for five weeks),’ said the 26-year-old ahead of Chelsea's Champions
League tie with Drogba and Galatasaray on Wednesday evening.
‘I spoke to him about it a lot. On the day before we sat for a couple of
hours and he told me I needed to believe.
‘He said “come on, man, you need to believe. Tomorrow can be a great
day. You might go to the pitch with one leg but you can run like you have
four or five because this is your dream. It is my dream as well – let's
do it”.
‘He helped me a lot and I will never forget what he did for me and
Chelsea.’
With defenders John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic suspended, the pressure
was on Luiz to make the starting line-up.
Not only did he declare himself fit, he completed the full 120 minutes
before dispatching his spot-kick into the top corner of Manuel Neuer's
goal.
Drogba, of course, netted the decisive penalty and signed off from his
Chelsea career in fairytale fashion.
‘He is a great friend of mine but he cannot have the same luck as two
years ago. He was fantastic for us and won us the cup.
‘But it cannot be his day this time. It is difficult to keep Didier quiet
but I hope it will be my and Chelsea's day.’
