UEFA YOUTH LEAGUE REPORT: CHELSEA 4 AC MILAN 1
Posted on: Tue 25 Feb 2014
== Summary ==
The Under-19 side progressed to the quarter-finals of the inaugural UEFA
Youth League with an excellent victory over AC Milan at Cobham. A Lewis
Baker free-kick at the end of the first half gave the hosts the lead
before goals after the interval from Jeremie Boga, Alex Kiwomya (pictured
top) and between those two, a Baker strike from 35 yards settled the tie.
Milan grabbed a late consolation through an Andrea Petagna header but
Dermot Drummy's side comfortably secured a last-eight home tie against
either Schalke or Real Sociedad.
== Team news ==
Drummy made two changes from the side that last featured for his Under-21
team, with Dion Conroy and Ola Aina coming into the back four alongside
Andreas Christensen and Fankaty Dabo.
Lewis Baker, who took of the captaincy with Nathan Ake away with the first
team squad, was joined by Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jeremie Boga in midfield,
while Islam Feruz started up front supported by Alex Kiwomya and John
Swift from the flanks. Mitchell Beeney continued in goal.
== First half ==
The hosts controlled possession in the opening quarter of an hour, though
it was Milan with the game's first opportunity after a couple of minutes
as Alessandro Mastalli shot past Beeney's near post from a tight angle.
Mastalli brought a save from Beeney shortly after, though the goalkeeper
gathered the low central drive comfortably, before Baker had an effort
charged down as the skipper looked to make things happen in the final
third.
He was soon involved in an intricate one-two with Boga as the Frenchman
skipped past defenders and rode a couple of challenges, however his final
effort flew narrowly over the bar. Kiwomya forced a low save from Stefano
Gori in the visitors' goal, while down the other end Christensen was
defending bravely and intelligently against the Italians' attacking threat.
Yet it was Chelsea dictating proceedings as the game settled down after
half an hour. Swift bent a shot wide before supplying an inviting diagonal
pass across the field to Kiwomya. The wideman cut inside cleverly onto his
preferred right foot but his low shot rolled inches past the post with
Gori seemingly beaten.

Milan, managed by their former striker and Italy World Cup-winner Filipo
Inzaghi, fashioned a chance after advancing promisingly down the right
flank through Davide Calabria and Maks Barisic, though Conroy (pictured
above) read the ball in behind excellently and diverted the danger behind
for a corner. The delivery from the right was low and Stefan Simic could
only connect tamely as Beeney gathered.
The deadlock was broken moments before the interval and the goal was
crafted by the home captain. Baker burst forward and was upended just
outside the box by Stefan Simic, before picking himself up to bend a
fantastic free-kick strike beyond Gori into the corner to net his fourth
goal of this European campaign. It was reward for a half in which the
young Blues had dictated the play.

== Second half ==
The visitors restarted brightly after the break with Andreas Petagna
firing narrowly wide inside the opening few minutes, before Drummy's side
doubled their lead. Boga (pictured below) picked up a loose ball in
midfield and carried it dangerously forward, before unleashing a wicked
strike from the edge of the area that flew beyond the helpless Gori.

Andrej Modic fired a free-kick from 25 yards narrowly wide as the hour
mark passed, while Chelsea continued to look threatening on the break,
with the pace of Kiwomya, Feruz and Boga a constant cause for worry for
the visitors.
Mastalli fired over after a free-kick routine teed him up with a sight at
goal on the edge of the box, while Drummy's first change of the game saw
the introduction of Izzy Brown and almost paid immediate dividends. He
burst inside from the left channel running at the central defenders before
supplying a well-timed ball to Feruz, though the striker's effort was well
blocked.
A third goal for the Blues did soon arrive, after a period of good,
sustained attacking play. Dabo advanced into the penalty area down the
right and managed to find Boga in a congested six-yard box, though the
midfielder's attempted back-heel was smothered away. However, the danger
had not passed and Baker arrowed a terrific shot into the top corner from
35 yards to join Swift as the leading scorer in Europe this season on five
goals.
http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/97/a9/0,,10268~12626327,00.jpg
The hosts were in a confident mood and eager to impress by adding to their
goal tally. A fourth was soon carved out as Swift sent Kiwomya in behind
down the right channel and the wideman finished confidently inside the
near post.
The game was now different from the tight affair played out in the opening
period and Milan had a goal of their own with 10 minutes remaining. Beeney
had initially spread himself well to make a smart save behind from Tamas,
though Petagna rose highest as the following corner was delivered and
nodded beyond the keeper to make it 4-1.
Kiwomya continued to enjoy space down the right and his pace was causing
real problems for full-back Krizstian Tamas. He worked himself in behind
the defender once again and Feruz fired his cutback into the keeper's arms.
There was time late on for schoolboy Jay Dasilva to make his Under-19
debut as he replaced Aina with a few minutes remaining, and the young
Blues held on to record another impressive European win. They will now
face a home tie against either Schalke or Real Sociedad in the
quarter-finals, with that game taking place this evening (Tuesday).
Next up for Drummy's boys is an Under-21 league trip to Arsenal on Monday
3 March. Before that Adi Viveash's youth team host Leicester City this
Saturday.
== Manager reaction ==
Drummy was understandably pleased after seeing his side progress in some
style and also spoke of rewarding the performances of those in younger age
groups in handing a debut to schoolboy Dasilva.
'It's really pleasing. It was a tough game tactically and they are very
good at what they do, which is sit and counter. We knew in the second
half, after we got the goal, they would have to come out at us and Jeremie
scored a wonderful goal not long after the restart.
'You have to be really pleased to beat AC Milan. They were very
complimentary before the game about the way we play so if that's getting
around Europe then we're very happy. It's nice to receive those
compliments from people like Filipo Inzaghi who've done great things in
football.
'I talk most days with Joe Edwards [Under-16s manager] and Adi [Viveash,
Under-18s manager] about the likes of Jay Dasilva and the other boys who
are doing well in their groups and we want to reward that.'
