Roger Federer does not expect the year-end No. 1 race to become competitive
and accepts that he may never return to the top of the ATP rankings again.

The Swiss got off to a strong start to the year by claiming his sixth
Australian Open title, but was unable to defend his Indian Wells and Miami
Open crowns.

After skipping the entirety of the clay-court season, his great rival Rafael
Nadal was allowed to build up a significant lead and Federer’s failure to
win Wimbledon saw him fall further behind.

Nadal has since picked up a third Masters 1000 title of the year by lifting
the Rogers Cup and in the Race to London – which provides a running total of
points secured by calendar year – the Spaniard leads the Swiss by 2,740
points.

Even 21-year-old German Alexander Zverev sits ahead of Federer in that list,
while Juan Martin del Potro and Novak Djokovic are far closer to the
37-year-old than he is to Nadal.
There are still plenty of points to play for and with Nadal absent from
Cincinnati, Federer will have a shot at closing the gap, but he’s admitted
that his time at the top of the rankings may be up as he prioritises
long-term health over short-term gain.

midway through unless I was in the lead. Maybe then it would be important and
be silly to deny it.

‘It is important to stay healthy. I have to enjoy myself and I have played
ok recently, but I can do better again.

one last time. If there is the situation for it to happen, I would chase it
again.

‘The year end I can’t really chase that, if it happens, it happens. If it
didn’t, it didn’t.

on now and not so much rankings.’

Federer, who begins in Cincinnati against Peter Gojowczyk, confessed that he
is ‘anxious’ about being physically ready for the biggest events and shed
some light on his withdrawal from the Rogers Cup last week.
‘I’ve trained hard, I’m anxious,’ he added. ‘I chose to skip Toronto for
the health of my body. I don’t want to be hurt, there is too much to play.

‘You’ve got to keep it all in perspective, it’s easier now for me to take
