Lampard rules two out of Sheffield United match

Christian Pulisic will not return to the squad for Saturday's game against
Sheffield United.

That was the big news to come out of Frank Lampard's media conference held
via video link from Cobham on Friday afternoon. The boss also updated on
Kepa Arrizabalaga who has been missing with a shoulder problem and on Kai
Havertz, who is isolating due to Covid-19, but the first update was on the
American. Pulisic pulled out of the warm-up last weekend at Burnley due to
hamstring discomfort.


'He is not fit to play,' reported Lampard. 'He is still suffering with his
hamstring and he is not training. In midweek he was training at a low
level but was not comfortable so we have to keep looking for the right
solution.

'Kepa has recovered. He still is getting a slight bit of pain but he is in
the squad for tomorrow.'


Lampard was questioned on whether Havertz might be passed clear to play in
Germany's games in the forthcoming international break.


'I don't know that,' he responded. 'With Kai, we must wait until he is
symptom-free first of all and then he will have to have a negative test,
so at the moment that is not decided, that is not clear.'


The player who replaced Pulisic in the team at short notice at Turf Moor
was Timo Werner, who went on to score and then add another two midweek in
the Champions League. Lampard commented on the striker's workload.


'It was clear with the Burnley game that I was planning on giving him a
rest, more because I had options and because of the journey to Russia and
back.


'Timo has had a lot of games but at the minute there is always a balance
in my job with players who are playing well and enjoying it and finding
their way in the team and making relationships, and feeling the league if
they are new to it. That has been a big deal for Timo as well so I have to
be happy with that.

'I am not talking about tomorrow necessarily, I am not going to give the
team away, but as we look forward I will try to manage those minutes to
keep him as fresh as I can but at the moment he is going well so we will
see.'


Werner's recent success at hitting the target has come with him playing on
the left of a front three in a 4-3-3 formation. Lampard points out that it
is a shape that was played a lot last season, but he did not use it in
early games this campaign.


'We had the change in personnel in the summer, and with some the players
there is a versatility,' he explained. 'Things that we would normally work
out in pre-season we had to work out in real time so we had a slight
change in formation earlier and with the 4-3-3 it has worked well recently.


'It does give a good balance to our team and there is a balance to our
system always where you want to pick the right one and then the players
sometimes have to adjust in that as well. So you need intelligent players
to take that information on board, we have that, so we just need to keep
working on it and also be ready to be flexible if we need to be at times.'

Christian Pulisic is out of tomorrow's Premier League game but with Hakim
Ziyech now fully up and running, Frank Lampard still has plenty of quality
down the flanks.

With Reece James able to operate behind the Moroccan if both are selected
on the right, the crossing potential there is clear, and on the left Ben
Chilwell has already demonstrated his potency, behind the likes of Mason
Mount or Timo Werner, or Pulisic when he is fit. The wide areas are
something Lampard has been discussing.


'Part of my thinking when Hakim Ziyech comes to the club is the balance of
the sides of the pitch which is very important for us,' he says.


'We knew Reece's quality last year in terms of crossing the ball and when
you can have a winger in front of him that offers different angles and
combinations on that side to put balls into the box, then it can be a big
strength of ours.

'When I say that, don't forget that Azpi has been here for years, making
big assists for the club at different times from all sorts of crosses and
different angles, so when we look at the sides of the pitch it is
something that we want to exploit and we can get better at it.


'At the moment we are getting praise for the sides of the pitch but as we
move forward we can get better at it in terms of our execution and
finishing in the box as well, but it is something I am happy with and we
want to keep working on it.'


After we lost 3-0 away to this weekend's opponents Sheffield United back
in July, Lampard was not happy with the lack of vocal support players gave
each other and lack of other talk, such as demanding the ball. Has that
improved in this season's games?


'We have made some changes in personnel,' he notes. 'Thiago Silva is a
player who brings an attitude and professionalism that is infectious. The
players are growing. At times last year we were a pretty young team and
definitely one of the games that is picked out in my mind is Sheffield
United at Bramall Lane where they beat us in every department and that
hardly happened last year.


'We just have to improve it with the work we do and the way that the squad
grows and that is a process, and it is a nice test tomorrow to see where
we go.

'I want to be clear going into the game that Sheffield United are an
amazing team with an incredible manager who if you look at the table,
nowhere near should we take that as a guideline for the game we have in
front of us.


'I watched them play Liverpool and Manchester City recently, who most
people would say are the best teams in the league, and they ran them both
very close. Sheffield United are still that great team that had such a
great season last year so it is a very tough match.'
