Garza takes tough 3-1 loss
Cubs' offense again lackluster for hard-luck starter

When Matt Garza takes the mound, the Cubs run production goes down
dramatically.
It happened again on a perfect Tuesday night at Wrigley Field when the
Cubs lost 3-1 to the Nationals before a dazed crowd of 37,109.
Garza held the Nationals scoreless for the first five innings, but
wilted during a three-run sixth, earning his ninth loss in 14
decisions. He wound up allowing three runs over six innings while
striking out nine.
"It is what it is," Garza said.
Though he has kept his cool during the prolonged stretch without run
support, Garza has had to be near perfect in every outing since the
start of July. In those last eight starts dating back to July 2
against the White Sox, the Cubs have scored 0, 0, 2, 2, 3, 1, 1 and 0
runs, respectively, when Garza was still on the mound.
Garza has won only once in that span.
"He has been up against it a lot," manager Mike Quade said. "But he
has thrown the ball extremely well."
Garza had given up only three hits through 5 1/3 innings before
Michael Morse cranked a homer over the top of the batters' eye in
center field. After Jayson Werth's single, Jonny Gomes lofted a
two-run homer into the first row of the left-field bleachers.
"That's usually what happens when you hang a slider in this league,"
Garza said.
Meanwhile, Nationals starter Chien-Ming Wang threw five no-hit innings
before Tony Campana led off the sixth with a pinch-hit, infield
single. That was the only blemish off Wang in six innings.
"That sinker moves an awful lot," Campana said. "You don't really know
how much it moves until I went up there and saw it. He was hitting
his spots pretty good today, which makes it that much tougher."
Starlin Castro's homer off Tyler Clippard — his third over the last
six games after hitting only three in the previous 107 games —
snapped the shutout in the eighth.
