Mount reveals what he said to team-mate before his goal and Lampard's
half-time instructions
17 Jan 2021
Mason Mount credited his rediscovered ability to arrive in the right place
at the right time for the goal that won the game at Fulham, and gave
Chelsea our first three points in the Premier League since Christmas.

He even timed his move forward for his well-struck shot in the 78th minute
from a deeper position against Fulham and it gave him his second goal in
two games.
'I turned 22 [last Sunday] and now I have two goals so it has been a good
week and hopefully that continues,' Mount smiled after the game. 'I should
have had two against Fulham really, I should have scored in the first half
but I am happy with one as well.

Mason Mount's shot hits the net
'Jorginho went off and the manager brought Tammy on and then Timo on so I
dropped a bit deeper and I was in there with Kov [Mateo Kovacic] so I told
him to sit a bit and that allowed me to go a bit more forward, and then I
found myself in the box which recently in the last couple of weeks I
haven't been doing.
'I haven't been getting in the box as much and that was something I looked
at. I managed to get in there in this game and it fell to me.'
The goal, the 11th Chelsea have scored in the final quarter-of-an-hour of
Premier League games this season, came after the team had to be patient in
breaking down a Fulham side that retreated deep in front of their goal
after they had a man dismissed just before half-time.
'They had five at the back and that is always difficult,' said Mount. 'You
kind of feel like you are camped in and you are trying to keep the ball
and you feel like you are getting impatient at times and you start forcing
it. That kind of sets in but we did well on that and we stayed patient.

'We tried to play and with them having a man sent off it helped us coming
out for the second half, and then it got better and better and we nicked
the goal so we are pleased with that.
'The gaffer said just keep moving the ball, keeping staying confident and
keep trying to open them up and let our quality come out and I thought we
did that.
'We analysed them a lot so we knew they have very good threats up front
and they defend well. Against many other teams they don't give many
chances away so we knew that but we stayed patient, we kept moving the
ball and tried to open them up from the sides and get crosses in.
Hopefully one was going to fall to us and luckily that fell to me and I
managed to score.'
Mount admitted the game felt like a must-win one before kick-off which
made the victory even more satisfying.
'It was a massive game for us. We know the run we have been through,
recently it has been tough. We have had to look at ourselves and it was
good to get the win against Morecambe, that was a step of getting wins
under our belt again and Fulham was a tough, tough game.

Frank Lampard issues instructions during the game
'We went on that run when we were doing very well and you can't let
complacency set in and then we went on a run of not doing well but that's
football, it is up and down, and we have shown character recently to
really dig in and work hard first and foremost in training, going up
against each other and having that competition and knowing that we need to
work hard and be as team to get the three points.
'I think we are getting back to where we were before and that is the
positive we can take out of it.'

Mount: The most important thing is to show character
18 Jan 2021
Saturday's match-winner reflects on sticking together and building on
positive momentum...

Fresh from scoring the match-winning goal in the west London derby on
Saturday evening, Mason Mount reflected on what the result might mean for
Chelsea's season following a stuttering run of form, insisting character
and togetherness remained key traits for the Blues to continue showing.
The contest at Craven Cottage was pretty one-sided, even more so after the
hosts were reduced to 10 men late in the first half, but Frank Lampard's
side had to show patience and persistence before finally finding the
breakthrough 12 minutes from time.
It was Mount who crashed in an excellent half-volley, displaying composure
and technique to keep the effort low and on target to seal an important
three points and notch his second goal in as many games.
Only N'Golo Kante has played more Premier League minutes than the
22-year-old this season and, despite a vocal minority of doubters on
social media, it is goals and games that Mount believes matter most in
proving himself to those that really matter.
'It's a footballer's life,' he said of the online narrative around his
place in the team. 'You're always going to have people that doubt you but
I'm not one to look too much into it.
'I'm just focused on performing on the pitch and playing as much as I
can. The most important people, I just try to make them proud. I let my
football do the talking, and scoring goals and putting in performances
will do that.'
The Blues have faced criticism in recent weeks as results have slipped but
ended the weekend just five points off the top four and champions
Liverpool. Mount believes the group mentality has stayed strong during a
difficult December and, with a quick turnaround ahead of our next league
outing, has called for this positive momentum to be maintained.
'We went through a tough period but the most important thing is to show
that character you need to get out of it when you're down,' he continued.
'That comes first and foremost from the gaffer. We do it for him.
https://i.imgur.com/YCYhXQU.jpg
'We've been very together the last couple of weeks and hopefully this is
the turning point. Now we move on to Tuesday [against Leicester City] and
attack that with the same mentality.
'It's going to be a tough game - we know how good they are but we played
well there last season and got a good result so hopefully we can do that
again.'
