As the NBA’s playoff races wind down, those teams who have long abandoned
postseason hopes have only the future to look forward to. SN’s Sean Deveney
is looking at the state of those teams and how their offseasons will shape
up, one by one.

The core of the Pacers’ assets looks familiar and probably will remain so
next season. Paul George’s attempted comeback from a broken leg was valiant
but not enough, so the hope remains that he gets fully healthy and returns to
earning the four years, $75 million he is slated to be paid. George Hill,
too, is locked in, at two years and $16 million, and he played very well
(16.1 points, 5.1 assists, 4.2 rebounds) once he got through his own set of
injuries. Questions remain about whether George and Hill, whose breakout
coincided with his All-Star teammate's absence, can mesh.

The Pacers also have swingman C.J. Miles (three years, $13.5 million) signed
long-term, and forward Solomon Hill is still on his rookie contract. Beyond
those guys, there are decisions to make. Center Roy Hibbert ($15.5 million)
and forward David West ($12.6 million) are in the final year of their
contracts, and neither is expected to opt out. Backup guard Rodney Stuckey
(12.6 points a game on 39.0 percent 3-point shooting), was instrumental in
keeping the Pacers in the playoff mix until the final day of the season, but
he is a free agent this summer and will want a multi-year deal.

The Pacers did their due diligence on shopping Hibbert last summer, but
(predictably) found no takers. He had an only slightly better season this
year, but the Pacers have some advantages this time around if they do shop
him again. Most notably, Hibbert has only one year left on his contract, so
making a deal for him would be a low-risk gamble for a suitor, even if it is
expensive in the short term. That could have a double impact because Hibbert
also figures to put forth a special effort in a contract year. There is also
the notion that Hibbert has worn out his welcome in Indiana and would benefit
from a change of scenery.

One assistant coach, pointing out that Hibbert is only 28, said he might be a
worthy gamble if you can get him to spend more time on the treadmill: “The
last two years, he has dropped off in the second half of the season," he
said. "With big guys like that, the first thing you think of is conditioning.
If you can make sure he is in shape for all 82 games, maybe give him time off
here and there, he would be worth the risk.” Just what the Pacers would want
for Hibbert, though, remains a critical and unknown factor in any talk about
trading him.

The Pacers have the No. 11 pick in this year’s draft, one of the benefits of
having missed out on the postseason. Assuming they don’t get wildly lucky in
the lottery, they still will be in good position to land a productive player.
Historically, the Pacers have been willing to run risks with their draft
picks, and it has paid off often, with players such as Paul George and Lance
Stephenson. But this is a draft heavy on big guys, and with both Hibbert and
West heading into the final seasons on their contracts, the Pacers could go
conventional and wind up with a big guy such as Willie Cauley-Stein, Myles
Turner, Frank Kaminsky or hometown hero Trey Lyles.

The Pacers won’t have much to work with for salary cap space this summer —
probably only their mid-level exception. With that in mind, they will almost
certainly do what they can to keep their current group together, depending on
what they do on the trade market. (They rejected offers for David West in
February.) Assuming the Pacers stand pat, bringing back Stuckey will be a
priority, and if they can get Luis Scola — another productive benchmate —
to accept a short-money deal, they’d like to keep him in place, too. They
would be on the market for more depth up front, though, and for a backup
point guard if they let C.J. Watson walk.
