The Raptors are built around their backcourt of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry.
That's a big-time positive when they are playing like All-Stars, which they
were the past two years (DeRozan in 2014, Lowry 2015), but it hurts when they
struggle with efficiency, as they did in the past two postseasons. DeRozan
shot 40 percent from the field against the Wizards in this year’s playoffs,
after shooting 38.5 percent last year against the Nets. Lowry struggled badly
this postseason at 31.6 percent, which was down from a pretty low 40.4
percent last year against Brooklyn. Neither player has an outrageously big
contract, with DeRozan due $19 million over two more years and Lowry getting
$36 million over three years (each can opt out of his final season). That’s
the good news.

The bad news is that the Raptors clearly need, and don’t have, a more
consistent scoring option in the frontcourt. The hope was that center Jonas
Valanciunas, who is up for a contract extension this summer, would grow into
that role this year, and while he showed improvements in skill and shooting,
his relatively timid approach meant that he was stuck at 12.3 points per
game. He should be scoring much more than that. Swingman Terrence Ross, among
the league’s most athletic players, also failed to have a breakout season,
and may have regressed in his third year in the league. The Raptors have
three reasonably priced role players coming back, too: Patrick Patterson (due
$12.3 million over two years), Greivis Vasquez ($6.6 million next year) and
James Johnson ($2.5 million next year). They will have significant cap space
available to lure players, but there will be plenty of competition, and
Toronto can still be a tough sell to NBA free agents.

The Raptors have decisions to make on two players, starting forward Amir
Johnson and Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams. But the bigger decision will
be on coach Dwane Casey. He has one year left on his contract, and though he
has taken the team to 97 wins and the two best records in franchise history
the last two years, Toronto’s sweep at the hands of Washington was an
enormous disappointment. The Raptors were 37-17 just after the All-Star break
but closed by going 12-16, and the defense Casey had worked so hard to turn
around gave back all of its progress over the course of the year. General
manager Masai Ujiri has been patient in running this bunch, though, and
though he was not the guy who hired Casey, the two have been on the same page
since Ujiri took the Toronto job in 2013. Casey is not likely to get an
extension beyond next season, but he is not likely to get fired yet, either.

If the Raptors hope to get NBA-ready help in the frontcourt at No. 20, they’
ll have to hope they get lucky. There’s a chance a versatile big man who can
score will be on the board (Arkansas’ Bobby Portis?), but it’s a longshot.
The Raptors could shake up the roster on the trade market and might lose
Williams in free agency. They’ll take the best-available-player approach
when it comes to the draft. And, if last year’s draft is any indication —
the Raptors chose little-known Bruno Caboclo — their interpretation of the
best player could be entirely unique.

Valanciunas is only 23, so there’s still hope that he will come back next
year a better scorer inside. But the Raptors can’t count on that, so they’
ll need to address their frontcourt scoring on the free-agent market, or by
trade. Ross was mentioned as a trade candidate last winter, but Toronto was
not interested in moving him. Perhaps that will change. Williams did a very
good job with his role as a Raptor this season, and he has said he would like
to return. That will depend, though, on what kind of offers Williams gets
around the league.
