LLEYTON Hewitt is paying for his desire in buckets of sweat.

Always an action kind of guy, Hewitt has backed up everything he has publicly said about his desire to win another Grand Slam with long hours on the court and time in the gym, which has only seemed like
it's longer.

Hewitt has been working harder than a rental mule of late. Ditching his old gym routine, Hewitt recently committed to Las Vegas trainer Gil Reyes and the intense regimes that Reyes designed to keep the
spring in Andre Agassi's ageing legs.

In doing so he has found a whole new set of unused muscles, and the strength within them. His commitment to the different, highly
intensive workload is the best sign yet that the fight is still
strong inside. He is doing all he can to refind the game that his
critics say he no longer possesses.

He has prepared for his opening match at Roland Garros under the
careful eye of leading Australian coach Darren Cahill -- Agassi's
last coach and Hewitt's first.

Cahill was courtside on Saturday when Hewitt finally arrived at
Roland Garros after his commitments at a tournament in Austria went longer than anticipated, and ran his eye over the Aussie hope.

Hewitt believes the full benefits of his new training regime will
not be evident until the U.S. Open in August, with the finished
product to be fully unveiled at January's Australian Open.

However he is feeling the benefits, and is aware of a significant
difference already.

"I feel stronger on the clay court already, just because it's such a demanding surface," he said. "When you're sliding and keeping your core strong it takes its toll.

Hewitt began training with Reyes at the urging of Cahill, who saw
how he benefited Agassi in one of the great comebacks in world sport.

Hewitt realises he is at an age and a stage in his career when he
must consider alternative ways to improve his game.

"I have been doing a lot of gym work, a lot of different gym work to what I have probably done in the past," he said.

Hewitt plays Bulgarian Max Mirnyi in his opening match, setting up a potential second-round clash with Gaston Gaudio, the last man to
win the French title before Rafael Nadal's dual wins.
