Brown: Like a dream
Fri, 25 Jul 2014
2014 will not be a year Izzy Brown forgets in a hurry.
It is only July but the forward has already picked up three winners'
medals this calendar year. He was an important member of our victorious
Under-21 Premier League and FA Youth Cup teams, and earlier this summer he
tasted success at international level, helping England's Under-17 side
lift the European Championships.
Now, the story continues. In our first pre-season game, against Wycombe,
Brown struck twice on what was his maiden appearance in a Chelsea shirt at
senior level, and he is currently one of a number of young players working
under the guidance of Jose Mourinho on our European training camp in
Austria.
We caught up with the 17-year-old after training to see what he has made
of his time working under Mourinho and training alongside some of the
best players in the world.
'It's been a great experience,' beamed Brown. 'It's different to anything
I've experienced before. Everyone has helped me settle down. All the
players and all the staff have made me feel welcome.
'It's like a dream to be with Chelsea on their pre-season tour. I'm very
happy to be here. It's hard to explain just how much you are going to get
better as a player and hopefully as a person in general.'
Brown is quick to stress the most important thing he can do on the
training field and during matches is work as hard as possible, something
the manager considers the most important facet of any player's game.
Added to hard work of course any player representing Chelsea requires
quality and Brown showed that in abundance against Wycombe last week,
finishing with aplomb on two separate occasions.
'It was amazing. To score two goals on my first game for the first team,
it's something I couldn't have dreamed of. Now I have to keep working hard
and hopefully more of that will come.
'I possibly should have scored the chance I had on Wednesday [against WAC]
and that is something I can work on in training and see what I could have
done differently. I just need to get that experience.
'Getting into the right positions is important: making those forward runs
into the box and getting goalscoring chances, that's what the boss has
told me to do. I've tried to do that in pre-season.'
There are other young players, including Brown's close friend Dominic
Solanke, who are also gaining invaluable experience with the first team,
and the striker says the integration period has been made even smoother
because there are familiar faces from his age group here in Austria.
What was less easy to deal with was the traditional initiation song which
new players are required to sing. Brown's moment came on Tuesday night
after dinner. He admits it was not an easy experience.
'Singing in front of the first team was one of the worst things I have
ever had to do! I think I was more nervous for singing than actually
playing!
'At least it's done now so I never have to worry about doing it again. I
can just relax and watch everyone else do it!'
