UNDER 17S IN INTERNATIONAL ACTION
Posted on: Mon 02 Apr 2012
Several Chelsea youngsters have been in competitive international action
over the past couple of weeks, with both highs and lows to report...
Nathan Ake (pictured) captained the Netherlands Under 17s to a 4-0 victory
over Albania as the elite rounds of qualifying for this summer's European
Championships got underway in Group 5, although he did suffer the fate of
missing a second-half penalty that would have been the fifth for the Dutch.
He played and was skipper for every minute of all three games over five
days, which also included a 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland and a 1-1
final-day draw with Serbia that saw the Netherlands through as one of the
seven group winners that will join hosts Slovenia at the tournament in May.
Schoolboy Islam Feruz started for Scotland in their opening 1-0 win over
Lithuania before starting the second game two days later from the bench.
However, the FA Youth Cup semi-final goalscorer was introduced at the
interval as the young Scots went down 1-0 to Iceland. Scotland therefore
needed a win in their final Group 6 game against Iceland, however despite
twice coming from behind they eventually succumbed to a 3-2 defeat that
saw them finish the campaign on just three points and exit before the
finals.
England kicked off their Group 3 elite round campaign with two Chelsea
representatives involved from the start in Georgia, as John Swift and Ali
Gordon both got 90 minutes in the young Three Lions' opening 1-0 win over
Ukraine. Swift also started two days later against Georgia, although
Gordon was an unused substitute, as England went down 1-0, leaving them
with it all to do against Spain in the final group game.
Swift and Gordon were again both starters against the Spaniards, though
despite a resilient first half display that saw the sides go in at 0-0 at
the break, Spain's quality told after the interval and they ran out
comfortable 4-0 winners. Swift was withdrawn just before the hour mark as
the 2010 winners missed out on the summer tournament. Schoolboy Jordan
Houghton was originally called up but had to withdraw due to injury.
The finals will consist of hosts Slovenia, Ake's Netherlands, Belgium,
France, Georgia, Germany, Iceland and Poland, and will run for just under
a fortnight from May 4.
