在上週六的比賽中，昔日傳統弱旅西布朗在主場以2-1擊敗了歐冠冠軍切爾西，
主隊也依靠這場勝利超越了輸球的埃弗頓上升到英超第4，而更值得一提的是，執教
西布朗的正是一代藍軍傳奇、退役後並且當過4年切爾西助教的克拉克。


這兩個賽季，曼聯、曼城和切爾西之間的英超三強爭霸的局面已經基本形成，最
後一個歐冠席位的歸屬已經成為奪冠以外最大的懸念，但本賽季開始後，誰也沒有想
到，昔日屢屢為保級而戰的西布朗在12輪過後竟然也能夠排在英超第4，把阿森納、
熱刺、利物浦等傳統強隊拋在了身後，而西布朗陣中最有名氣的球員只是奧德姆溫吉
和前曼聯門神福斯特而已。


踢右後衛的克拉克球員生涯時代曾效力過聖米倫和切爾西，當然，還有他的國家
隊蘇格蘭，克拉克於1987年加盟斯坦福橋，當時的身價是42萬鎊，並且一直待在藍軍
直到1998年，先後421次出場，還在離隊前奪得了1997年足總盃冠軍、1998年聯賽盃
和優勝者盃冠軍，在2005年，克拉克還入選了切爾西球迷評選的藍軍世紀最佳陣容。


如果說克拉克踢球時的名氣只能在切爾西球迷世界打響的話，那麼他從教後才真
正讓自己為世人所熟知，1998年，他加入紐卡斯爾輔助古力特，隨後就重返老東家藍
軍執掌青年隊，當莫里尼奧在2004年入主斯坦福橋時，克拉克被提拔上助理教練，並
輔助狂人在隨後幾年取得了極大的成功，包括幫助切爾西奪得兩個英超、一個足總盃
和兩個聯賽盃冠軍，而在2006年，他也考到自己的歐足聯教練牌照。


當莫里尼奧在2007年9月離開切爾西，克拉克繼續輔助格蘭特，並帶領藍軍殺進
歐冠決賽，2008年夏天，克拉克離開切爾西加盟西漢姆，去輔助另一個前切爾西舊將
佐拉，在第一個賽季幫助西漢姆殺到聯賽第9後，克拉克成為整個英超薪水最高的助
教，但隨後一個賽季西漢姆又故態復萌淪落到降級圈，最終驚險保級，克拉克也隨之
和佐拉一起走人。


2011年1月，克拉克被剛上任的達格利什任命為利物浦助教，而在1年半後，利物
浦因為最終只排在11/12賽季聯賽第8而炒掉了國王，而克拉克也隨之離開了紅軍，並
在今年6月入主西布朗，但這次克拉克終於當上了主教練，當時並沒有多少人看好他，
但12輪過後，西布朗已經爬升到聯賽第4的位置，而且還擊敗了克拉克的老東家切爾
西。


蘇格蘭球員在世界足壇並沒有太多名字響亮的巨星，但頂級教練卻一抓就是一大
把，從香克利、弗格森再到達格利什，從現在來看，克拉克極有可能步他們的後塵，
畢竟他先後與莫里尼奧、達格利什等名帥特別是前者共事已學到了豐富的執教手段，
切赫就曾經非常不解為什麼利物浦炒掉達格利什後不把克拉克扶正，在這名捷克門神
看來，克拉克完全有能力執教好利物浦，而如今西布朗的排名也許就是最好的證明。

STEVE CLARKE admits he could have been the manager lifting the Champions
League trophy for Chelsea — not Roberto Di Matteo.


West Brom chief Clarke reckons he had a job for life as No 2 at Stamford
Bridge. But he decided to remove the “safety net” four years ago and
move on.


With the number of changes in the managerial hotseat since Jose Mourinho
was sacked in September 2007, Clarke is likely to have got a crack at the
Blues' job.


But it was Di Matteo who profited when Andre Villas-Boas was axed after
March's defeat by today's opponents Albion. And 15 months after being
dismissed by the Baggies, RDM won Europe's top prize as Chelsea beat
Bayern Munich on penalties.


Clarke, who took charge in the summer, said: “It wasn't necessary for me
to move. I could still have been at Chelsea now if I'd chosen to take that
path. I decided to take away the safety net to challenge myself and push
myself.


“If I'd stayed there as the No 2 and got the chance to do the main job,
who knows? It's possible — but it didn't happen because I chose a
different path.”


Clarke left the Bridge in 2008 to join Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola at
West Ham before heading to Liverpool in the summer of 2010.


He added: “I'm not the sort of person who's happy sitting and coasting
along. I felt I'd done all I could at Chelsea and it was time to move on
to different things. But if I'd stayed it would have been pretty much a
job for life, I'd have been comfortable there for a number of years.


“I was close to getting a Champions League win — it was a John Terry
slip on his penalty in the final against Manchester United. But it leaves
me with another ambition to aim for as a coach! This is the next stage of
my development. I've waited a long time to take this job.”


Clarke knows it was vital that Chelsea won the Champions League after
Roman Abramovich's money had built them into a domestic super-power.


He added: “They had won all the domestic trophies, so it was the logical
next step. I had a wry smile as I was delighted for a lot of people who
did win the trophy.”


RDM returns to The Hawthorns today for the first time since he was axed in
February 2011. Clarke is impressed by Di Matteo's revival after his
sacking.


The Albion boss said: “If someone has taken you up to the Premier League,
you'd expect them to stick around a bit longer. It was probably painful at
the time but Robbie bounced back really well from it.


“I didn't see him as a future manager when we played together. Some
people maybe, but it was a 'No' to Roberto. But he was devastated when he
had a bad injury that forced him to retire. Then when I was coaching the
youth team one day, he was standing by my side and asking me questions.


“I'm not surprised he's done well as he's a very deep thinker. I've been
impressed with the way he's handled everything at Chelsea. He's a good man
and a decent person. I hope Robbie will get a warm welcome — he'll
certainly get one from myself and the staff.”


Clarke, who is hoping to maintain Albion's top-six push today, added: “If
we beat Chelsea, we'll be beating a team that's above us in the league —
that's really something to be proud of. But it won't mean anything on a
personal level.


“We played Manchester City and raised our self-esteem, even though we
lost — this time we'd hope to do the same and get a different result.”


Clarke knows this fixture cost AVB his job last season.


But he added: “That's football. The Chelsea connections are all there,
aren't they?”
