Chelsea Here Chelsea There: Cumming helps loan club towards safety

Goalkeeper Jamie Cumming has enjoyed an impressive debut season in senior
football and this weekend made his 39th appearance of the campaign for
League Two Stevenage.
The Hertfordshire side have moved away from trouble in recent weeks with a
10-game unbeaten run, during which time the 21-year-old has kept six clean
sheets. He did concede in their latest outing at home to Barrow on
Saturday but the Boro secured victory with two goals of their own in a 2-1
win.
The result keeps them entrenched in mid-table, closer to the play-offs
than the relegation zone, and continues a remarkable turnaround in
fortunes for a side that were in the bottom two at the turn of the year.
Reflecting on his pathway starting in English football's fourth tier,
Cumming said recently: 'I think this is a path most goalkeepers have
taken. Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson, for instance, played non-league
football and in the lower leagues, and are now playing for England.

Pickford also spent time in the English lower leagues
'It's something you have to do as a young goalkeeper because it's not the
same as an outfield player where you can jump straight into the first
team.'
Cumming's fellow Academy graduate and goalkeeper, Nathan Baxter, missed
Accrington Stanley's weekend game against Peterborough United with a
shoulder injury, though Jon Russell did feature as a first-half
substitute. Accy lost 7-0 to promotion-chasing Peterborough, leaving them
four points adrift of the play-off positions in League One.
In the same division, Luke McCormick was involved throughout in both of
Bristol Rovers' fixtures as the Gas suffered back-to-back 1-0 defeats
against Swindon Town and Sunderland. Joey Barton's side are now two points
from safety with eight games remaining.
