The heart wanted the relationship with Chien-Ming Wang to continue. The head,
influenced by medical reports, was willing to only go so far.
So, the not-so-long-ago ace of the Yankees staff took his surgically repaired
right shoulder into the free-agent pool. Now, according to agent Alan Nero,
the right-hander who turns 30 next month is close to signing a guaranteed
major league deal -- with the Nationals and Dodgers believed to have shown
the most interest -- though he isn't expected to be ready to pitch until May.
"We are a week to 10 days away before a final decision," Nero told The Post
yesterday. "A couple of teams have been very aggressive and are far ahead.
We are not going to do a contract pending a physical. A couple of teams have
made offers."

Wang wasn't tendered a contract by the Yankees after undergoing right
shoulder surgery in July.
Wang went 55-26 with a 4.16 ERA in 109 games (104 starts) and won 19 games
in 2006 and 2007 and was 8-2 in 2008 when a foot injury ended his 2008 season
in June. He was 1-6 with a 9.64 ERA in 12 games (nine starts) last season.
"We would have loved to have him back, but due to the risk of shoulder
surgery, I only offered a minor league contract with major league terms
if he gets back to health," GM Brian Cashman said.
