Under-21s report: Middlesbrough 1 Chelsea 3
Mon 25 Apr 2016
An early Charlie Colkett penalty set Adi Viveash's side on their way to a
convincing win at the Riverside Stadium tonight (Monday).
The midfielder, who signed a new three-year contract on Friday, converted
from the spot after Reece Mitchell was taken out inside the box. The lead
was doubled before the break by triallist Yasin Ben El-Mhanni, and further
extended early in the second half when Mitchell powerfully headed in Miro
Muheim's outswinging cross.
Boro responded instantly following some hesitant defending but there were
to be no further goals so the young Blues rise to sixth in the Under-21
Premier League after a fourth away win of the campaign.
Viveash made four changes to the team who began the Under-21s' last
fixture, at Everton a fortnight ago. Mitchell replaced the ill Islam Feruz
up front while Richard Nartey started his first match at this level
alongside the more experienced duo of Dion Conroy and Ola Aina in a
three-man defence.
Elsewhere, Muheim also made his first Under-21 start and El-Mhanni came in
for Jay Dasilva, who will be part of the group aiming to retain the FA
Youth Cup in 48 hours' time. His younger brother Cole played his first
minutes at this level late on at the Riverside tonight.
It was Chelsea who started the brighter. Muheim and Kasey Palmer had shots
blocked before Mitchell might have done better from Palmer's through ball,
all inside the opening five minutes.
Down the other end, Nartey and then Fankaty Dabo threw themselves in front
of the ball as our hosts threatened for the first time. Both might well
have been goal-saving interventions.
Their value was heightened even further when we were awarded a penalty on
13 minutes, Mitchell the man kicked to the ground as a high, loose ball
was contested. Colkett calmly sent Joseph Fryer the wrong way.
Muheim and Mitchell were looking especially lively in the final third and
the pair combined to fashion chances for one another midway through the
half, but on both occasions Fryer was equal to the task denying Viveash's
youngsters a second goal.
But the Boro keeper was helpless to prevent El-Mhanni firing in after
Mitchell had pressed high up the pitch and forced sub Bryn Morris in to a
mistake. That goal came on 37 minutes and, save for a headed effort from
Mark Kitching straight at Bradley Collins, represented the last meaningful
action of a half largely dominated by those in blue.
The Blues began on the front foot when play restarted with El-Mhanni
drawing a good stop from Fryer, before Mitchell headed the goal his
performance merited, Muheim's trusty left foot once more his supply line.
That was the Swiss Under-16 international's last involvement, Alex Kiwomya
immediately introduced in his place.
Our three-goal advantage was soon reduced as a mix-up at the back between
Collins and Conroy allowed Jakupovic time to stroke the ball into an open
goal for 3-1. The Boro striker drew a diving save out of Collins midway
through the second half as the home side tried to further reduce the
arrears.
Needing goals to get back in to the game, Boro pressed us back and started
to dominate possession but they rarely threatened Collins, though he did
deny Harrison Chapman at his near-post on one dangerous occasion.
At the other end Colkett shot wide and Palmer curled an effort straight at
Fryer, while McAloon had a header saved by Collins as Boro went for broke.
There would be no late additions to the scoreboard, however, but a
satisfying evening ended with another debut at this level as Luke
McCormick was introduced for the final moments.

Adi Viveash was delighted with his team's display, particularly in an
attacking sense, and he was also pleased to be able to give debuts to
three younger players. He said:
'We were very good until we let them score a goal, after which they had 15
minutes of the game. But we regained control and probably deserved more
goals for our attacking display. We looked exhilarating going forward at
times – the fluency, the movement, the pace and power, the
decision-making was all excellent.
'There were some really good performances all over the pitch. We scored
three and Kasey didn't score which doesn't happen very often. Young
Richard Nartey played very well, and it was nice to get Cole Dasilva and
Luke McCormick on for their debuts too.
'We played a three with a box in midfield and three up. We thought it was
the best system for the players we had available. We worked at it
beforehand and it worked well for most of the game. We switched to a 4-3-3
for the last 20 minutes when the pressure came and we still created
chances on the break.
'We now look forward to playing Everton next Monday after what was an
important victory tonight.'
