Under-21s report: Leicester City 1 Chelsea 1
Sat, 27 Sep 2014
Izzy Brown struck for the Blues as our Under-21 side maintained their
unbeaten start to the season with a score draw in the East Midlands.
The young forward netted a glorious opener with 10 minutes of the first
half remaining. Not long after the interval Gary Taylor-Fletcher, the most
experienced man on the pitch, levelled with a neat volley. That was the
last of the scoring and an entertaining game between the league's top and
bottom teams ended level.
The Under-21s are next in action in three weeks' time, at home to Fulham,
though plenty of this group will be involved in the Under-19s' UEFA Youth
League game in Lisbon this Tuesday.
== TEAM NEWS ==
There were two changes to the starting XI that defeated Everton in the
Under-21s' last outing two weeks ago. Lewis Baker captained the side,
having been an unused substitute for the first team on Wednesday evening,
while Alex Kiwomya returned after a spell out with injury. Charly Musonda
and Dominic Solanke made way.
The hosts included two players that came on during our first team's
victory over the Foxes at Stamford Bridge last month, Marc Albrighton and
Taylor-Fletcher. Tom Lawrence was the Manchester United scorer in our 2-1
Under-21 Premier League play-off final success at Old Trafford in May.
== FIRST HALF ==
Nearly a quarter of an hour had passed by the time the game's first shot
in anger was struck, but Baker's well-hit effort with his left went
straight down Leicester keeper Adam Smith's throat. A near-identical
strike three minutes later had the same result.
At the other end, Fankaty Dabo did well to deal with a dangerous Powell
pass as Albrighton hovered behind him, but in truth the opening stages
were more cagey than cavaliering.
The first clear opportunity was created by the visitors in yellow. Jordan
Houghton neatly exchanged passes with Brown on the edge of the box,
latching on to the return ball and, on the slide, drawing a decent stop
from Smith.
Ola Aina had to stretch to deny Taylor-Fletcher a certain goal from
close-range, expertly cutting out a low Lawrence centre. The 33-year-old
former Blackpool man recovered the ball, though, audaciously chipping for
goal from a tight angle. It beat Beeney but not the crossbar, thankfully
rebounding to safety.
Brown and then Baker were denied by a good save and block respectively but
there was no stopping the former with 35 minutes played.
A fine Chelsea counter-attack from one end to the other was finished off
in some style by the 17-year-old, who cut in from the left and curled a
wonderful strike into the top right-hand corner from 20 yards out. It was
some way for Brown to open his Under-21 league account this season.
That advantage should really have only lasted for 90 seconds but Lawrence
was denied at very close range by Beeney after Powell had cutely flicked
an Albrighton cross into his path. Powell then went close himself, his
dipping drive from distance dropping not far over Beeney's bar.
== SECOND HALF ==
Viveash introduced Charlie Colkett and Charly Musonda in place of
Loftus-Cheek and Boga during the interval but it was Leicester who started
the half the better and they were level inside five minutes. A corner was
not fully cleared and when it was swung back in, Taylor-Fletcher was in
the right place to hook the ball over Beeney from the edge of the six-yard
box.
The young Blues responded well to conceding. Musonda fired over before
Colkett and then Baker forced Smith into action from distance.
Brown had an excellent opportunity to put his side back in front with a
quarter of an hour remaining. As dangerous as ever on the shoulder of the
last defender, he pounced on a poor clearance from Alie Sesay on the
corner of the six-yard box, tried to wriggle free of Smith before shooting
straight at the Leicester stopper's chest from point-blank range.
Next it was Brown's turn to be provider, laying the ball on to Musonda who
then shifted it right to Kiwomya. The winger took a touch before flashing
his shot not far over Smith's bar.
There was danger at the other end when Beeney couldn't hold a dangerous
Leicester free-kick, before Davey produced an outstanding block to deny
substitute Simonas Stankevicius a clear route to goal.
As the match entered its final minutes the play swung from one end to the
other with gaps appearing, but neither team could capitalise on the extra
space and so it ended all-square.
== MANAGER REACTION ==
Speaking to the official Chelsea website after the match, manager Viveash
explained why he was pleased with his team's performance against a side
with plenty of first team experience.
'It was a tough game,' said Viveash. 'It was really great for us to play
against an Under-21 team with the calibre of some of their players.
Taylor-Fletcher obviously has a wealth of experience.
'Our back four were very good and we were able to stay in the game at
times because of them. Izzy Brown worked his socks off up front but our
technical players didn't have their best days and that affected us.
'Either team could have won it - maybe a draw was the fair result. It was
really a tough Under-21s game and that's what you want, playing on a super
pitch in a main stadium. Four games in, we're still unbeaten and it's been
a very pleasing start.'
