Under-18s report: West Ham 2 Chelsea 5

Sat, 13 Dec 2014

Our Under-18s finished the year with a win this morning (Saturday) and
kept themselves top of the Under-18 Premier League's south section.

Ike Ugbo and a Kyle Scott penalty put Joe Edwards' side in control early
on before Djair Parfitt-Williams halved the deficit moments before the
interval.

Two goals in five minutes midway through the second period settled the
contest as substitute Faiq Bolkiah and Kasey Palmer netted, before Ugbo
added his second and the Blues' fifth.

Substitute Decarrey Sheriff bagged a consolation for West Ham in the final
minute of normal time but that wasn't enough to prevent the visitors
taking home all three points.

== Team news ==

There were four changes for the Blues from the starting side that beat
Leicester last week. Bradley Collins continued in goal behind a back four
consisting of Fikayo Tomori, George Brady, captain Jake Clarke-Salter and
schoolboy Josh Grant.

Isaac Christie-Davies, Ruben Sammut and Scott continued in midfield, while
Ugbo led the line up front, supported from out wide by Palmer and Charlie
Wakefield.

== First half ==

Chelsea started brightly in the east London morning sunshine and their
early endeavours were rewarded inside four minutes as they won a penalty.
Palmer drove into the box and was brought down by a late challenge from
defender Manny Onariase. After two goals in two games, Christie-Davies
stepped up from 12 yards but saw his effort saved by goalkeeper Clarke
Bogard, reaching down low to his left.

However, the deadlock was broken from the following corner as the Hammers
failed to clear the danger and Ugbo swept home from close range.

West Ham responded well and Grady Diangana went close to levelling after
14 minutes. His effort took a big deflection off the blocking Brady and
wrong-footed Collins but flew just wide. Collins then made an excellent
reflex save to push Jordan Brown's deflected rising shot away before we
doubled the advantage.

Tomori advanced into the box from left-back and was upended by Alex Pike,
leaving the referee with little choice but to point for another penalty.
This time there was no reprieve for the hosts as Scott found the bottom
left corner with a confident finish.

The contest remained open and West Ham continued to show their quality and
threat, forcing the impressive Clarke-Salter into a series of blocks and
interceptions. Wakefield's low drive brought a strong save from Bogard
before Steve Potts' side reduced the deficit moments before the break.

Joe Powell struck a stinging free-kick from 25 yards that Collins failed
to hold and the pouncing Parfitt-Williams reacted quickest to poke in the
rebound.

== Second half ==

Tomori floated an early free-kick narrowly wide and Bogard pulled off a
brilliant save to tip Palmer's rasping drive on to the crossbar as the
second period got underway, before two Chelsea goals in five minutes
settled the contest.

Substitute Bolkiah had been on the field barely a minute before he prodded
in the Blues' fourth goal. A sublime team move, with Scott the driving
force and architect, saw the ball moved from the Chelsea half into attack
with speed and purpose. Tomori's low centre from the left was turned in by
the sliding forward with his first touch.

That was followed by a brilliant individual goal as Palmer received the
ball on the left flank, beat a defender with a clever nutmeg and fired an
unstoppable drive beyond a helpless Bogard that arrowed into the top
corner.

West Ham continued to pose an attacking threat, often through the quick
and tricky Parfitt-Williams down the left, and he went close to grabbing
his second goal of the game with a powerful strike that rose just inches
over Collins' bar.

Down the other end, Palmer's influence on the game was proving significant
and his efforts brought about the Blues' fifth goal. A powerful run from
midfield fashioned an opening and, while his low shot was stopped by the
goalkeeper, the poaching Ugbo was on hand to turn in the rebound.

The young Hammers grabbed a consolation goal in the final minute of normal
time, substitute Sheriff firing into the bottom corner beyond Collins,
though the points remained safely Chelsea's.

== Manager reaction ==

Joe Edwards expressed his pleasure at his side's first win in four away
games and the fact they had ended their 2014 programme with a victory that
keeps them top of the league.

Speaking to the official Chelsea website after the game, he said: 'We
spoke a lot in the build-up about our away form and how we needed to
improve.

'Our results and performances at home have been good but we haven't always
matched that away so to come to a place like West Ham, which is always
tough, and win like that is very pleasing.

'We showed a lot of desire and determination, which we knew we would need,
and we dealt with that physical side of the game brilliantly.

'They caused us problems with the individual quality they have in attack
but Jake led the defence brilliantly and Brad made a great save at 1-0,
which was really important. Kasey Palmer capped off a good little run of
form he's been on with a very good performance today and his goal was
outstanding.'

Next up for the Academy is a league encounter for the Under-21s tomorrow
(Sunday) as they host Sunderland at Cobham. The youth team return to
action in the New Year.
