Under-18s report: Swansea City 1 Chelsea 1
Sat 23 Jan 2016
Chelsea Under-18s stretched their unbeaten league run to 13 matches with a
hard-fought draw in South Wales this morning (Saturday).
The table-toppers stretched their lead at the top of the south section to
six points with just three games of the regional programme remaining.
Richard Nartey's goal after 20 minutes sent us in ahead at the break
before an equaliser from Brandon Griffiths ensured a share of the spoils.
Following victory in the FA Youth Cup the previous evening, there were six
changes from the side that last lined up for the youth team in the
Under-18 Premier League in a 4-2 win over Tottenham. Jared Thompson
returned in goal protected by a back three of Joseph Colley, Nartey and
Ali Suljic.
Ruben Sammut was one of those who featured in Manchester just 16 hours
before and he skippered the side once more from central midfield alongside
Luke McCormick. Cole Dasilva and Harvey St Clair operated at right
wing-back and left wing-back respectively, while Jacob Maddox and Isaac
Christie-Davies provided the support for striker Miro Muheim.
The hosts had the better of the few early opportunities as Thompson
gathered comfortably from Keiran Evans's effort and Colley headed a
dangerous bending strike away from danger. Down the other end, Muheim's
low drive from 20 yards out clipped the outside of the far post before the
visitors were celebrating an opener moments later.
This time Muheim turned provider as his inswinging free-kick caused panic
in the Swansea six-yard box and Nartey was on hand to nod beyond the
stranded Ross Treacy for his second league goal of the campaign.
Christie-Davies fired narrowly over following a flowing break forward down
the right led by Dasilva and Muheim before Thompson was forced into action
to deny Brandon Cooper as the defender looked to head in a leveller
following Evans's delivery.
Treacy got down well to push St Clair's dangerous drive behind and Nartey
shot just over on the spin following a corner from the right as the game
remained a fairly open affair. Goalscorer Nartey was required in more
familiar territory as the interval loomed to thwart Griffiths with a
last-ditch sliding challenge before Muheim blazed off-target in the final
notable action of the half.
The Swans restarted brightly and would have been level had it not been for
the efforts of Thompson in the Chelsea goal. The Blues stopper twice
denied Griffiths within the opening 10 minutes of the second period, the
second of which was an impressive one-on-one stop.
Treacy palmed over a rising drive from St Clair as we looked to seal the
points with a second goal but it was the hosts who grabbed the next goal
to restore parity in the game. Neat build-up play on the edge of the
Chelsea box fashioned a sight at goal for Griffiths and this time the
striker made no mistake with a tidy finish beyond the goalkeeper.
The leveller ensured a lively finale in which Liam Cullen came close to
grabbing a winner for the home side with a looping attempt that rebounded
back off the crossbar with Thompson beaten. Schoolboy substitute Dujon
Sterling brought a routine stop from Treacy and Muheim blazed wide but it
was Liam Cullen for the hosts with chances to snatch all three points at
the end.
The midfielder mishit a good chance as the ball looped over his shoulder
before Thompson dived low to his left to push a bobbling effort behind and
preserve a point for the leaders.
