YOUTH REPORT: NEWCASTLE 3 CHELSEA 2
Posted on: Sat 12 Apr 2014
== Summary ==
A Chelsea youth team featuring 11 schoolboys across the 90 minutes went
down to a late league defeat at Newcastle. Isaac Christie-Davies had given
the visitors the lead before two goals in five minutes from Tom Heardman
and Alex Gilliead turned the game around.
Kasey Palmer (pictured) levelled the scores with eight minutes remaining,
however a last-minute strike from Gilliead gave his side all three points.
Chelsea earlier missed a penalty.
== Team news ==
With the trip to the North-East sandwiched in between two legs of the FA
Youth Cup semi-final against Arsenal, it was a young squad that travelled
to compete in the final away trip of the league campaign. There were
starts for just three first year scholars as Bradley Collins captained the
team in goal, George Brady began in the heart of defence and Kasey Palmer
featured behind the front two.
A mixture of Under-16s and Under-15s comprised the remainder of the side
as Trevoh Chalobah, Josh Grant and Jay Dasilva joined Brady in defence,
while Mukhtar Ali, Ruben Sammut and Christie-Davies made up a diamond
midfield. Ike Ugbo and Faiq Bolkiah led the line up front.
The hosts featured six of those who had started the Youth Cup meeting
between these two teams last month, including England Under-17
internationals Gilliead and goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.
== Report ==
The visitors started the game on the front foot, controlling possession
early on and creating a couple of chances inside the opening quarter of an
hour. Palmer shot wide when positioned promisingly after being teed up by
Ugbo before the young Blues went ahead through Christie-Davies.
Ugbo and Palmer combined intricately on the edge of the Newcastle box and
Palmer fed in his fellow midfielder and he finished confidently past
Woodman for his first goal of the season at this level.
Chelsea had a chance to double their lead after the restart after Bolkiah
was felled inside the box by defender Michael Newberry, however Woodman
saved Palmer's penalty before returning to his feet quickly to thwart the
17-year-old's effort from the rebound and keep his side's deficit at one.
Woodman again denied Chelsea as he came out bravely to save from Ugbo and
the goalkeeper's efforts proved crucial moments later as the young Magpies
levelled. Collins had done well to keep out Gilliead's rasping drive but
could do little to prevent Tom Heardman equalising as the striker slotted
the ball into the back of the net.
The hosts' comeback was then complete five minutes later as a short
back-pass from Brady put Collins in trouble and the lurking Gilliead
pounced to beat the keeper and put his side ahead. The Blues had to show
character to revive the contest and it was Palmer who provided the
inspiration to regain parity in the match.
He found some space in the no. 10 position and beat a couple of defenders
before finishing beyond Woodman with a left-footed strike that earned him
his seventh goal of the campaign. That equaliser reinvigorated the
visitors and they pushed on eagerly searching for a winner.
Dasilva's header lacked pace after a delivery from substitute Mason Mount
before Newcastle snatched the game's fifth goal on the break in stoppage
time. Gilliead again proved decisive, leading the attack forward and
slotting the ball past Collins to grab all three points for his side.
Next up for the Academy is a league trip to Villa Park for Dermot Drummy's
Under-21s as they take on Aston Villa this Monday 14 April. It is live on
Chelsea TV. The youth team are next in action on Thursday 17 April as they
travel to the Emirates to face Arsenal in the second leg of the Youth Cup
semi-final.
Adi Viveash's side hold a 2-1 advantage from the first leg at Stamford
Bridge. Tickets are priced at £4 for adults and £2 for concessions and
can be purchased online until noon on Monday 14 April.
== Manager reaction ==
Joe Edwards, the Under-16 manager, took charge of the youth team for the
trip to Tyneside and he praised his young side's efforts against older,
stronger opponents. Speaking to the official Chelsea website afterwards,
he said: 'I'm really pleased with the performance and with how aggressive
we were with our pressing and transition against a more senior, physical
team.
'To get four more Under-15 players on the pitch in a game of that level,
and to still put in a performance and almost get a result, is a huge
credit to the boys.'
Edwards highlighted the efforts of Palmer in an unfamiliar advanced
midfield role and explained the reasons behind the slight tinkering of the
team's usual shape.
'We decided to play with a diamond in midfield today, with Ike Ugbo and
Faiq Bolkiah up front and Palmer just behind them. We did some work on it
in training yesterday as it's quite a new role for Kasey but we wanted him
involved as a goal threat for us.
'It was really pleasing the way he tactically implemented what we were
trying to do. He led by example as one of the senior players and was the
most threatening player on the pitch.
'Ruben Sammut was brilliant at the base of the diamond. He read the game
well and stepped in to keep us pinned in their half, defending from the
front and aggressively winning the ball back, similar to what the first
team have been doing recently.
'The standout of the Under-15s was probably Ike Ugbo. He got his goal last
week against Bolton and his movement, understanding and work-rate were
terrific and to step up from Under-15 to Under-18 level is a massive
difference in terms of intensity, physical demand and the way in which it
all happens.
'It was disappointing to lose in the last minute but I thought it was one
of our best performances off the ball this season. The aggression of our
midfield to win the ball back high up the pitch was outstanding.
'In years gone by there would be games like this that you'd have to call
off or stomach the fact that you'd be on the end of a difficult result
with a very young team. The fact we have such good quality and depth in
our Under-16 and Under-15 age group is a real credit to us as an Academy
but, more importantly, a real credit to the boys themselves.'
