under-18s-report--chelsea-4-southampton-3.html

Sat, 16 Aug 2014

Our youth team came from behind twice to triumph in their season opener as
a strong side ran out 4-3 winners at Cobham.

The visitors raced into a two-goal lead inside the opening 15 minutes as
Marcus Barnes grabbed a brace, the second from the penalty spot after Dan
Demkiv was upended in the box, before the Blues pulled a goal back before
the break through a penalty of their own, confidently dispatched by Tammy
Abraham.

Kasey Palmer levelled the scores with a wonderful individual effort
shortly after the restart. However, a brilliant Josh Sims strike from
distance put the visitors back in front.

The Blues left it late but overturned the deficit again in the final seven
minutes. Abraham poked a loose ball over the top beyond Isted to make it
3-3 before substitute Josh Grant headed in the winner in the 87th minute
(pictured top) to give the hosts all three league points on the opening
day of the new season.

== Team news ==

Joe Edwards' first starting team as Under-18 manager featured several
second-year scholars as the youth team kicked off the new campaign with a
strong side. Bradley Collins, George Brady, Palmer and Charly Musonda
began, with the rest of the team comprising new first-year scholars.

Last campaign's top goalscorer Dominc Solanke led the line up front,
supported from out wide by Musonda and Abraham, while Isaac
Christie-Davies started in the number 10 role alongside Palmer and Ruben
Sammut in midfield. Brady was joined at the back by captain Jake
Clarke-Salter, Jay Dasilva and Fikayo Tomori.

== First half ==

The tone was set for a lively encounter inside the opening exchanges as
the visitors rattled the woodwork through Chris Regis, before they took
the lead after 10 minutes. Striker Marcus Barnes pounced on a
defence-splitting pass forward from Regis and finished confidently low
into the far corner beyond Collins.

Southampton's advantage was doubled five minutes later as forward Demkiv
was tripped as he advanced into the box following another incisive pass
and the referee pointed to the spot. Barnes stepped up and blasted his
effort emphatically into the roof of the net to give the young Saints a
perfect start.

Edwards' side responded strongly from that early disappointment and tested
goalkeeper Harry Isted with a flurry of chances. Christie-Davies saw a
free kick effort comfortably gathered, Abraham brought a low save from the
keeper from the right and Solanke was thwarted after fashioning an opening
for himself inside the penalty area.

However, the pressure soon paid off as the Blues were awarded a penalty of
their own midway through the half. Abraham was fouled as he prepared to
fire at goal following a corner from the right and the striker picked
himself up to slot the spot-kick into the bottom right corner beyond
Isted's dive.

Chances continued to be forged at both ends as Southampton responded by
hitting the woodwork again. Barnes found space down the right channel and
thumped the post, before Collins made a strong stop on the rebound from
Regis. Isted then denied Solanke with a great one-handed save after
Musonda supplied the pass as the hosts went in at the break with a slender
deficit to overturn.

== Second half ==

The hosts were looking to pick up from where they left off at the start of
the second period and soon regained parity in the game with a wonderful
individual effort from Palmer. The midfielder picked up the loose ball 30
yards from goal and embarked on a slaloming run forward, skipping in
between defenders and around challenges, before dispatching the ball
expertly into the far corner.

Palmer quickly brought another good save from Isted as Chelsea restarted
in the ascendancy, however the free-flowing nature of the contest refused
to abate and the balance swung back in the visitors' favour with the fifth
goal of the game. Sims floated inside from the right and fired an arrowing
drive from 25 yards that flew past the helpless Collins into the top
corner to put his team back in front.

Izzy Brown and Mukhtar Ali entered the fray as the game moved into the
final quarter of an hour, though it was Barnes down the opposite end
providing the biggest threat as he searched for his hat-trick, first
bringing a good save from Collins and then firing narrowly wide after a
centre from the left.

Isted continued to stand in the way of Edwards' team grabbing another
leveller, flinging himself low to his right to palm away a Solanke header
that appeared destined to nestle in the bottom corner, yet he was unable
to stem the tide for much longer. Clarke-Salter delivered an inviting long
ball forward and Abraham accelerated away in behind before poking the ball
beyond the onrushing Isted and into the unguarded goal.

That equaliser buoyed the home side to push on for a winner and Isted was
picking the ball out of his net once again a few minutes later. A corner
from the right was dangerously swung in and substitute defender Grant rose
highest to powerfully head the loose ball in for the winner.

Next up for the Under-18s is a league trip to Arsenal next Saturday 23
August, while the Under-21s take on Norwich City at Aldershot Town FC the
following afternoon.

== Manager reaction ==

Edwards reflected after a dramatic game on his pleasure at seeing his side
come from behind to take all three points but admitted the nature of the
open game meant there was plenty of work to do in the coming weeks.
Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'We wanted a fast,
sharp start to the game so obviously we were a bit disappointed that
Southampton had the better of us in that opening part of the game.

'The big lesson you learn when you step up from Under-16s to Under-18s is
that people are more clinical in front of goal. They didn't have a lot of
chances but they took the little sniffs we gave them and so without being
poor we were suddenly 2-0 down. Their keeper was fantastic but you have to
give credit to the boys and their mentality to come from behind and win
the game.'

The manager also paid tribute to goalscorers Abraham and Palmer, the
former having been deployed in a wide role and the latter working his way
back to full fitness following a disrupted pre-season.

'Tammy was lively, always alive in and around the box. Obviously with
Dominic and Izzy we had a few strikers on the field and they all prefer to
play up top but Tammy is always a threat and it was a very calm finish for
his second goal at that stage of the game.

'We knew Kasey wasn't going to be able to play 90 minutes today so we
spoke about the hour or so that he was going to play and he was certainly
more aggressive on his press and on the front foot after half time. I was
really pleased for him today because he's had a bit of a disjointed
programme with injuries and switching between groups in pre-season and it
was a great solo goal from him.'
