Under-18s report: Chelsea 4 Southampton 1
Sat 19 Nov 2016
Our Under-18s came from behind to secure an impressive win at Cobham this
morning (Saturday).
Michael Obafemi fired the visitors into the lead with a powerful volley
and the hosts trailed at the interval before a system switch and some
stern words provided the inspiration for a second-half comeback.
Callum Hudson-Odoi proved pivotal as he scored and then forced an own goal
within eight minutes of the restart, before substitute Charlie Brown
bagged a brace late on to keep us top of the Under-18 Premier League south
section.
There were five changes for the Blues from the side that won 3-1 at
Brighton a fortnight previously, with Harvey St Clair and Hudson-Odoi
returning in attack alongside Martell Taylor-Crossdale, the Under-18
Premier League's leading goalscorer.
Four of the back five retained their places as Jared Thompson lined up in
goal protected by a back four of captain Josh Grant, Marc Guehi, Reece
James and Cole Dasilva. Tariq Uwakwe and George McEachran came into the
midfield, joining Conor Gallagher.
Jody Morris's side came into the league encounter on a run of 23 games
unbeaten at home, though it was the Saints who had inflicted a first
defeat of the season on Morris's men in the reverse fixture back in
August. The Blues had fallen behind in that game and the same fate befell
them on a bright winter's morning at Cobham.
St Clair had thumped the crossbar with a wonderful individual effort
moments earlier but it was Southampton's number nine who claimed the
game's opening goal with 12 minutes on the clock. An advance down the
right sent alarm bells ringing and when William Smallbone headed a deep
cross back into the six-yard box, Obafemi was on hand to volley an
unstoppable drive beyond Thompson.
It was slightly harsh on the hosts, who quickly set about restoring parity
down the other end. Hudson-Odoi fired narrowly wide from the right and
McEachran's free-kick was blocked by the wall, before Uwakwe provided the
sternest test of the first period for keeper Adam Parkes.
The midfielder was marking his 17th birthday and the signing of a first
professional contract at the club, though Parkes denied him a goal to cap
the milestone with a smart low save to push away his shot towards the far
post.
St Clair struck the woodwork for the second time in the first half when
Parkes tipped his bending free-kick on to the bar and the Scotland
Under-19 international brought another save from the visiting goalkeeper
in added time following a neat move involving McEachran and Uwakwe.
Morris changed the shape at the interval to utilise 4-3-3 and the switch
paid instant dividends as we turned the game on its head within eight
minutes of the restart. Hudson-Odoi only turned 16 last week but he played
a crucial role in the turnaround, finishing high into the roof of the net
on the rebound after Parkes had spilled St Clair's strike.
The winger then supplied a dangerous delivery from the right flank which
defender Christoph Klarer could only divert into his own net. The
confidence that came from going in front set the tone for a much-improved
second half performance from the league leaders.
Taylor-Crossdale was thwarted by a good stop from Parkes following
positive work down the left from St Clair, before the striker shot just
wide of the goal frame having advanced infield dangerously.
Guehi had to be on high alert to block bravely from Tyreke Johnson after a
miskicked clearance from Thompson, though the Blues remained in control
and soon sealed the three points with a brace from the bench in the final
10 minutes.
Brown replaced Taylor-Crossdale up front and netted within a minute of his
introduction at the end of a stunningly clinical move. Hudson-Odoi raked a
brilliant pass out wide to James, who delivered a teasing first-time
delivery into the box for Brown, who didn't need a second invitation to
find the back of the net with a smart finish.
The 17-year-old made it 4-1 in the final minute of regulation time with an
equally-impressive finish, collecting a pass 16 yards out before steering
the ball ruthlessly into the bottom corner for his fifth goal of the
campaign.
Following a difficult first period, it was a scoreline and a result that
Morris's side deserved. Our youngsters return to action next weekend with
a visit to Fulham on Saturday 26 November, while the development squad are
also on their travels the same day with a Premier League 2 trip to
Manchester City. The latter is being screened live on Chelsea TV, with
kick-off at the altered time of 12.45pm.

Under-18s reaction: Clear at the top
Sun 20 Nov 2016
Our youth team moved three points clear at the top of the Under-18 Premier
League south section this weekend following a spirited comeback and home
victory over Southampton.
Trailing at the interval for the first time this season, manager Jody
Morris demanded significant improvements from his side in the second half
and he was left feeling satisfied at the resilience and character shown.
The change in formation may have helped but Morris felt the turnaround had
more to do with other individual factors.
'I said to the boys at half-time, even though we were changing the shape
from a midfield diamond to 4-3-3, the things I was asking them to do in
the second half had little to do with the system we were playing,' the
manager told the official Chelsea website. 'Southampton were better than
us in the first half in all departments and the most disappointing thing
was that it looked like they wanted it more than us.
'Even though it might look like changing the system was the difference, I
felt we lacked personality and character in the first half and it was
those areas that we focused on at half-time. We've been on a good run of
late and the key features of that have been us dominating second balls,
flooding the midfield and being physically strong. We didn't do those
things well enough so the lads had a lot to prove in the second half.'
The manager was understandably happy with the second-half performance,
which saw a strike from Callum Hudson-Odoi, a brace from substitute
Charlie Brown and an own goal secure the three points for his side.
'I was really pleased with how we responded to blow Southampton away and
we could have scored six or seven in the end. It was the first time we've
been behind at half-time this season so that was a test of our character
to come from behind. The early goal obviously helped to settle us down but
then we had some outstanding individual play from certain players and also
good passages where we looked a lot more fluid.'
Morris also emphasised the point that there is more to his work as
Under-18s manager than merely winning football matches. George McEachran,
Tariq Uwakwe and Hudson-Odoi lined up in slightly unfamiliar midfield
roles, a part of development that is crucial to improving the rounded
individual player.
'We struggled in midfield playing certain players in positions they
haven't played in this season but that's all part of the challenge of
development,' continued Morris. 'We need the players to be flexible, not
just from the tactical point of view but also the physical side as well.'
Hudson-Odoi has caught the eye in recent weeks, following up his maiden
youth team goal at Brighton before the international break with a standout
performance against the Saints. The schoolboy only turned 16 last week
though and, while Morris is clearly a fan, he also recognises there are
plenty of ways the young forward can improve his game further.
'We all know what Callum is capable of and he showed flashes of brilliance
in the game but it's important we keep setting him new challenges. I
wanted to see him play with a bit more defensive responsibility at the top
of the diamond.
'It's easy to play him in his best position every week but it's our job to
improve him as an all-round footballer and to do that we need to teach him
about the other side of the game and his role in the team. There's no
bigger fan of Callum than me and he knows that but there will also be
nobody more demanding of him than me either.'
Morris's men return to action in the Under-18 Premier League next weekend
with a trip to Fulham. The youngsters will also begin their FA Youth Cup
campaign next month with a third round home tie against Cardiff City. A
date for the meeting at Aldershot will be confirmed on this website
shortly. The young Blues have won the competition in each of the past
three years.
