Under-18 report: Chelsea 2 West Ham United 2
Sat, 13 Sep 2014
== Summary ==
Our youth team shared the league points against West Ham on Saturday
morning as the visitors twice came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw. Kyle
Scott put the young Blues ahead inside three minutes and that lead lasted
for almost an hour before Marcus Browne struck an unstoppable volley to
level.
Joe Edwards' side were back ahead late on as Abraham turned home from
close range with nine minutes remaining, however the Hammers fought back
again as Jordan Brown grabbed an equaliser to ensure the points were
shared.
== Team news ==
There were four changes for Edwards' side from the starting eleven that
began at Leicester a fortnight previously, with Jay Dasilva and schoolboy
Josh Grant coming into the back four alongside captain Jake Clarke-Salter
and Fikayo Tomori. Bradley Collins continued in goal, while Kyle Scott and
Tammy Abraham regained starting spots further up the field.
Ruben Sammut and Mukhtar Ali anchored in midfield as Isaac
Christie-Davies, Kasey Palmer and Scott provided the attacking support for
Abraham in the final third in a 4-2-3-1 system.
== First half ==
It took 90 minutes and a stoppage-time goal to break the deadlock and grab
the win last time out for the youth team at Leicester but there was little
wait this weekend as the hosts found the opening goal inside three
minutes. A bright start was instantly rewarded as Abraham's low centre was
turned beyond Hammers goalkeeper Clarke Bogard from close range by the
lurking Scott.
The early goal provided the Blues with confidence and they continued to
express themselves and threaten throughout the opening exchanges of the
half. Palmer fired wide from 25 yards before an intricately-worked goal
was ruled out for offside after Christie-Davies had lashed a brilliant
finish into the roof of the net.
The visitors responded with a couple of testing set-piece deliveries for
Collins before striker Jordan Brown, with two Under-18 goals to his name
already in 2014-15, hit a low strike that the goalkeeper watched well and
gathered comfortably.
There was little goalmouth incident in the remainder of the period, though
Ali dragged an effort narrowly wide before Joe Powell had an opportunity
to fashion a chance when running at exposed defenders but Tomori
marshalled the situation well.
== Second half ==
Brown almost capitalised on early second half hesitation at the back from
the young Blues before Collins reacted just in time to thwart the danger,
then Christie-Davies fired a promising free kick chance over the bar.
However, West Ham's quick opening after the restart paid dividends as they
levelled the scores before the hour mark. A spell of pressure had pinned
the hosts deep into their own half and, as Sammut cleared the latest
attacking wave, Marcus Browne latched on to the loose ball and hit a
bouncing volley beyond Collins via the underside of the crossbar.
That set the scene for an even battle in the second half as both sides
looked for the additional two league points that a win would bring, though
the organised defences were prevailing. Brown found an opening for himself
midway through the half but struck his opportunity over the bar and
substitute Kieran Bailey fired narrowly wide after good work down the left
by Brown as the visitors fashioned the better opportunities.
The visitors were left to rue those spurned chances as Edwards' side
grabbed the game's crucial third goal with seven minutes remaining. After
surviving a penalty shout in their own box, the hosts attacked with pace
on the break and made progress down the right flank. Substitute Charlie
Wakefield supplied the low cross into the six-yard box and striker Abraham
steered the ball past Bogard.
Yet there was late drama still in store and it was Steve Potts' team who
found another equaliser as Brown accelerated away from Tomori and struck a
fierce low drive that squirmed underneath Collins and into the back of the
net.
Next up for the Under-18s is a home game against West Brom next Saturday
20 September. The Under-21s are back in action tomorrow with a league
trip to Everton, while our Under-19 side begin their UEFA Youth League
campaign next Wednesday 17 September against Schalke at Cobham.
== Manager reaction ==
Edwards described his feelings after the game as mixed after seeing his
side largely control proceedings and yet concede a late goal to surrender
two valuable home league points. Speaking to the official Chelsea website,
he said: 'We had a couple of days to prepare and we watched one of West
Ham's previous games so we knew a bit more about them than we usually do
with our opposition.
'We changed to a 4-2-3-1 and had Kyle Scott back in the team after injury
and I thought we used the system very effectively in the first half. We
really controlled and dominated and perhaps we could have been a bit more
ruthless in looking for that second goal.
'We spoke at half time about how West Ham were still right in the game but
they still caught us sleeping a bit at the start of the second half. We
were off the pace in midfield and got punished by an outstanding strike,
though the way we gave possession away was too easy.
'Then to work so hard for another goal and get it with such a short period
of time left, we have to manage the game out better than we did. It might
be a bit of naivety with the boys stepping up to this level and so many
first-years taking full responsibility but to concede on the break as
cheaply as we did was disappointing and of course we look at it as two
home points dropped.
'We're disappointed with the result but there were a lot of pleasing
performances today; Tammy down the middle as a number nine was superb and
his hold-up play was fantastic for us. Jay Dasilva was back to his best
and at full sharpness after a bit of a knock in pre-season, while Ruben
and Mukhtar were also very solid at the base of midfield for us today.'
