U18s report: Chelsea 2 Aston Villa 1

22 Sep 2018

Our youngsters made it three wins in a row in the Under-18 Premier League
by coming out on top in an entertaining match at a rain-soaked Cobham.

We took an early lead with a fine solo goal from George Nunn but Aston
Villa, who had themselves enjoyed a good start to the season, proved to be
worthy adversaries and were a constant threat, especially on the break,
despite a controlled performance to enjoy the majority of possession in
the first half.

The second period started much the same as the first, with an early goal
for the Blues, this time a classic poachers goal by Armando Broja, who was
alive in the box to emphatically smash home a loose ball from close range.

We were pegged back to 2-1 almost immediately and had to survive some
heavy pressure, especially from long balls as Villa chased an equaliser in
the closing stages, but held firm to take a deserved win to make it three
victories from as many matches in September, having already beaten Arsenal
and Swansea this month.

The Blues continued with the 3-4-2-1 system, with the back three and front
three remaining unchanged. Jake Askew came in for Ziger as the goalkeeper,
while a much-changed midfield saw only Ian Maatsen on the left retain his
place from the win over Swansea, with Marcel Lavinier coming in on the
right, while Jon Russell and Pierre Ekwah Elimby partnered up in the
centre.

The first effort on goal fell to Nunn, but he couldn't get enough power in
his half volley from the edge of the box from Ian Maatsen's bouncing
cross, with Aston Villa goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo able to make a
comfortable safe.

The visitors also had an early sight of goal, but Dimitri Sea's powerful
effort from range flew high over the crossbar.

The game had started with a high tempo. After Maatsen had seen an effort
blocked in the Villa box after good work on the right from Armando Broja
and Marcel Lewis, and the Claret and Blues went straight up the other end
on the counter, Jake Askew doing well to hold Jacob Ramsey's curling shot.

We increased the pressure, as Sam McClelland came agonisingly close to
getting his head on a corner at the back post with the goal gaping. It
wasn't one-way traffic, though, with captain Jack Wakely having to step in
smartly to prevent Sea getting in behind our back-line.

However, after 13 minutes the Blues had the opening goal, through Nunn.
The winger did brilliantly cutting in from the right, beating two
defenders across the face of the box, before hitting a low left-footed
shot in off the right-hand post.

Villa tried to hit back quickly, with Marcel Lavinier making a good block
when Colin Odutayo had found space in our penalty area. That started a
period of pressure from the away side, with a succession of crosses from
Lewis Brunt on the right, before Askew rose to claim the ball and release
the pressure.

As we passed the midway point of the half, the rain was becoming heavier,
but we reasserted ourselves to dominate possession for long periods,
looking comfortable with our one-goal lead, although chances were proving
difficult to come by for both sides once play reached the final third.
When a sight of goal did finally arrive, some resolute defending from
Villa saw two shots charged down in quick succession before the keeper
gratefully held Lavinier's low effort from the edge of the box.

Askew was called into action again, showing a lot of bravery to dive in
among the feet to deny Sea twice in a matter of seconds, after Odutayo's
pace took him to the byline to cut the ball back six yards out.

It looked certain that Pierre Ekwah Elimby had extended our lead when his
header from Maatsen's cross flew towards the bottom right corner, but
somehow Sinisalo got down to hold the ball at full stretch.

Dynel Simeu showed excellent awareness to recover and stop Sea getting in
behind the Chelsea defence, cutting out the pass at the last moment as
Villa tried to catch us unawares from a quickly taken free-kick.

We twice threatened with the variety of our set-pieces as the first half
drew to a close, first from a well-worked short corner which was saved by
Sinisalo, and then when Wakely jumped highest at the back post from a
high, looping delivery, but his header came down on the roof of the net.

Villa came out for the second half looking intent on finding on equaliser
as soon as possible, with Askew called into action early on, but
comfortably gathering Ramsey's shot.

In fact, it was the home side which soon had a goal, Broja making it 2-0.
After a spell of pressure on the right from Russell and Lavinier, Lewis
capitalised on a wayward defensive pass to run at the Villa players in the
box. When the ball broke loose, Broja, who had spent most of the first
half working tirelessly for little reward up front, smashed the ball into
the top corner from close range.

It was very nearly three just moments later, McClelland's low shot going
inches wide of the near post after another clever corner from Maatsen and
Lewis.

As it turned out, though, our two-goal lead didn't last long, as Sea
pulled one back with a diving header from six yards just seven minutes
after Broja's strike.

The second half continued at a high pace, but Ekwah's flicked header
wouldn't drop quickly enough at the back post after Lewis and Lavinier
again got the better of their opposite numbers on the right. Lewis then
had a chance himself after laying the ball wide to Lavinier at the end of
a long weaving run and getting into the box to meet the low cross himself,
but his shot couldn't find it's way through a crowded penalty area. It
would be Lewis' last involvement, as he was replaced by Thierno Ballo soon
afterwards.

It looked for a moment like our second substitute, Henry Lawrence, would
have an instant impact, when Ekwah's poked pass found it's way through the
Villa defence, but he ended up stretching to keep the ball in play at the
touchline and his slid cross was too close to the goalkeeper.

Broja went close to getting his second as the game entered the last 10
minutes, picking up the ball after Maatsen had done well on the left to
win the ball and run at the Villa defenders, but another high and powerful
Broja shot went just wide of the near post.

There was a bad scare for Chelsea with just eight minutes remaining, when
Ethan Patterson was left a free header at the back post from a long
free-kick, but he sent it narrowly wide. The closing stages saw Villa
going long more and more often as we were forced to sit back and defend to
hold on to our slender lead until the final whistle. We had to survive a
series of corners in stoppage time, but defended well to see out a
deserved 2-1 win.

Under-18s reaction: Doing the right things

23 Sep 2018

Our Under-18s overcame tough opposition and a downpour to beat Aston Villa
2-1 at Cobham, with assistant manager Jon Harley seeing plenty of
positives from our third consecutive league win at that level.

Goals early in each half from George Nunn and Armando Broja were enough to
give us the win, although we were made to work hard for it after Villa had
pulled a goal back in the second half, making for some nervous moments as
we held strong under pressure during the closing stages.

Those three points also saw us jump the Midlands side in the Under-18
Premier League table, going one point ahead of them in third place.

'We're definitely pleased with the outcome,' said Harley. 'Looking at the
league table, Villa were above us and they're a good team. We'd watched
them, they're a well-organised, well-drilled, solid team. So we knew it
was going to be difficult to try and break them down, but, especially in
the first half, we probably kept the ball as well as we've done in a
while.

'That was helped by the wet surface, it had a little bit more zip to it,
but all in all, myself, [manager] Andy Myers and all the staff here are
very pleased. It was good for us to come out with the victory overall.

'Especially in the first half we were happy with the way we felt the
midfield dominated the game. Jon Russell, who probably played his longest
period of a game so far this season, was outstanding. He was getting on
the ball, moving it quickly, especially in the first half, and he was a
big part of why we did so well in that first period.'

The former Chelsea defender also felt the way the team stood up to Villa's
second-half pressure, particularly an aerial onslaught of long balls as
the final whistle approached, is the kind of situation which can pay
dividends when it comes to young players' development.

'The way we went about it and the way we came through the last 20 minutes
was a huge plus for us. We had tired legs and tired minds for probably the
last 15 to 20 minutes, which led to quite a few unforced errors, something
we're trying to eradicate. But during that last little period we were
definitely up against it. But Villa are a good team and there was no way
we were going to underestimate them.

'They were going for it in that last little period of the game. That's
also good for us. Everyone talks about Academy football and how teams can
overplay, but when you are chasing the game and there are points at stake
in the last 10 minutes, they have to go direct and we have to defend
against that. It's good to get that for these boys development-wise,
because that's what they're going to have to deal with when they do
eventually move on into the big world of senior football.'

The sight of forwards Nunn and Broja both getting on the score sheet was
also very satisfying for Harley and the rest of the Academy coaching
staff, and just reward for their overall performances.

'It's nice when our strikers are scoring goals and the two strikers we had
on the pitch both scored, so it's a huge plus. I'm really pleased for
Armando. His general all-round performance was very good and we're really
happy he's got that goal, because it's been a long time coming this
season, but now he's off the mark.

'We know what qualities he's got, but for us it's just important that we
try to get him in the right areas of the pitch and not out wide all the
time. He did that today and he led the line brilliantly, so his goal was
very well deserved.'

- The next chance to watch live one of our Academy sides in home action is
on Saturday, when our development squad play a PL2 fixture against
Liverpool at Aldershot. Entry on the gate is £3 and £1 concessions.
