Under-18s report: Chelsea 1 Everton 0
Sat 12 Mar 2016
Chelsea Under-18s bounced back from a defeat last week to claim three
points in a hard-fought encounter at Cobham this morning (Saturday).
Dujon Sterling grabbed the only goal of the game just after the half hour
mark with a well-taken finish and the home side maintained the advantage
throughout the second period with great endeavour and desire to kick-start
their elite play-off campaign.
Joe Edwards made one change from the side that were beaten at Manchester
City the previous weekend as Sterling replaced Charlie Wakefield in the
starting team. The Under-16 defender lined up at right wing-back as the
youth team reverted to a 3-4-2-1 shape, with Miro Muheim at left wing-back
and centre-backs Joseph Colley, Trevoh Chalobah and captain Josh Grant.
Ike Ugbo, the side's top goalscorer, led the line up front supported by
Jacob Maddox and Isaac Christie-Davies in advanced midfield, while Ruben
Sammut partnered Mason Mount at the base of midfield.
As expected now the programme has moved into an elite play-off round with
the top four sides from both the Under-18 Premier League north and south
sections competing against one another in a seven-game mini-league, it was
a competitive start at a chilly, overcast Cobham.
Ugbo saw a front-post header gathered following Muheim's inswinging corner
from the right as the Blues took the initiative early on, though the young
Toffees grew into the game as they aimed direct balls forward into striker
Shayne Lavery. The forward escaped in behind after 15 minutes and squared
across for Nathan Holland but Chalobah read the danger well and blocked
the goal-bound drive bravely.
Mount then fired wide after doing well to go beyond the defender and
Edwards's side broke the deadlock just after the half hour mark. It was a
goal carved out down the right flank as Sterling powered forward and beat
left-back Jamie Mellon to the loose ball, latching on to it after
steadying himself quickly and finishing into the bottom far corner.
Baxter had to react quickly and smother bravely after a short pass back
from Grant momentarily placed the hosts in danger before the keeper got
down well to push Holland's low shot round the post as we took a slender
advantage into the break.
The visitors restarted brightly searching for a route back into the game.
Lavery struck tamely and straight at Baxter from a good position and
Baxter saved again moments later, this time from Holland's header after
Mellon's teasing cross from the left.
Christie-Davies's strike was blocked on the edge of the box as the game
opened up and chances arrived at both ends. Antony Evans squandered
another good opportunity to level for Everton as his effort flew over,
while Broadhead also shot off-target.
Muheim went within inches of extending our advantage with a free-kick
right on the edge of the box that squirmed through the wall and deflected
just wide of the far post. The Blues enjoyed a quick flurry of chances as
the game moved into the final 20 minutes, with Ugbo's close-range strike
blocked following Grant's knock-down and then Christie-Davies forcing a
save from keeper Ciaran O'Loughlin.
Edwards reverted to four at the back with the introduction of Cole Dasilva
in the final exchanges as we looked to close out the game and claim all
three points. Chalobah and Colley continued to defend manfully as the
youngsters retook control of the midfield battleground.
Christie-Davies shot straight into the wall from a free-kick and Sammut
blasted wide on the rebound, while O’Loughlin denied Ugbo with a smart
save in the final minute of normal time as Edwards's team secured all
three points.
The youth team return to action next weekend when they host West Ham at
Cobham. The game will now kick-off at the later time of 1.30pm. Before
then, our Under-19s and Under-18s play knockout cup football against Ajax
in the UEFA Youth League quarter-finals (Tuesday 15 March, 4pm) and
Blackburn Rovers in the FA Youth Cup semi-final first leg (Friday 18
March, 7.45pm). Both games will be screened live on Chelsea TV.
