The Timberwolves on Thursday traded a very unhappy Mike James to Houston for
Juwan Howard, and Kevin McHale, the team's vice president of basketball
operations, predicted it's the first move to improve the team.

However, even with the present roster, you can't convince McHale that the
Wolves are far behind the teams that made it to the playoffs this year.

"We've got to get better, there's no question about it, but again, my opinion
is there's a lot of parity in our league right now," McHale said.

And he said he doesn't believe there are the super teams that existed during
his playing days with the Celtics.

"I've said this before: Earlier this year people were telling me that Dallas
was a great team. I said, 'Would you take Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, or Dirk
Nowitzki? Would you take Magic Johnson, or Jason Terry? Would you take Josh
Howard, or James Worthy?' That was a great [Lakers] team."

McHale doesn't question that the Wolves have to shake up the roster.

"We've got to add a piece or two, things can happen," he said. "We've got to
do that. We've got to go out and we've got to put a better team on the floor.

"But I don't think anybody's all that far [from the top]. I mean, sometimes
you hear people talk like you're way, way, way, way far away. We're a bit
away, but I think that can change quickly, too.

"Again, I'm not saying that we have to have 12 new players, but I think we do
need to get some new players, and hopefully this [trade] is the start of
adding some new players," McHale said.

With the big contracts the Wolves have, and players such as Troy Hudson, who
has a multiyear contract but has little value because he is hurt all the
time, it will be a real challenge for McHale to put a team on the floor that
can match San Antonio, Phoenix or any of the other power teams in the Western
Conference.
