Chien-Ming Wang was 7-2 (soon to be 8-2) after two consecutive 19-game
winning seasons, and the Yankees were 12-3 in games Wang started. The
horror began on June 15, 2008 in the 6th inning of a ballgame in
Houston's Minute Maid Park. The Yankees were up 3-0 behind starter
Wang, a national hero in his native Taiwan. Wang came up to bat with 1
out and runners on 1st and 2nd. He bunted, but it led to a forceout at
third base. Now on first base, Wang ran hard to second base and made
it when Johnny Damon's grounder to SS was misplayed. Wang ran hard
again and scored when the next batter, Derek Jeter hit a liner through
the right side of the infield. But there was a problem- something
snapped in Wang's foot. It turned out to be a small bone we never
heard of before, something called a lisfranc. Here is the video.
Wang's whole world turned upside-down from that point until now. His
2008 season was over. His attempted return to the Yankees' rotation in
the spring of 2009 was a disaster. It was said in many places
(including right here) that the Yankees mishandled Wang's rehab by not
allowing him to keep his legs in shape as the lisfranc healed. By the
end of 2009, Wang was released. He was signed by the Washington
Nationals for 1 year and spent all of 2010 in rehab. He was re-signed
by the Nats for the 2011 season. Finally last month he was ready to
pitch in real ballgames. From then until now he has started 5 games in
A, AA and AAA levels. Here are his 2011 stats. Overall, Wang, now 31,
has pitched reasonably well. He is expected to make one more AAA start
next Monday and might make his return to the MLB after that.
BTW... his start Monday will be in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, against the
Yankees AAA affiliate. It should be interesting.
