SWITZERLAND
Benaglio - 7: Caught flapping in the second half as Suazo headed wide but
made one spectacular save to keep Swiss hopes alive and did little else wrong.
Lichtsteiner - 7: Aided the attack to excellent effect and was solid and
reliable in the right-back berth. Made one mistimed lunge which Grichting
atoned for.
Von Bergen - 6.5: Made a number of telling interceptions to thwart the
Central American's swift counterattacks but had lapses of concentration in
the second half to allow Honduras some threatening chances.
Grichting - 7.5: Brave aerial display from the key performer for the Swiss at
the back. His positional sense was first class.
Ziegler - 6.5: Excellently timed covering tackle on Jerry Palacios midway
through second half but lacked his usual attacking threat when Switzerland
needed it most.
Barnetta - 7: Brilliant first half performance, looked like he may provide
the crucial key to unlocking the Honduran defence but his influence waned as
the game wore on.
Inler - 8: The best player on the pitch without doubt. Dictated the pace of
the game throughout the first half and was influential in the second even
though he was probably in too advanced a position to continue pulling the
strings.
Huggel - 7: Hard-working midfield display, passed it well and kept the Swiss
on the front foot but didn't work back enough and left his defence exposed on
a number of occasions.
Fernandes - 6.5: Industrious performance but lacked the creative flair to
provide a telling opening for the Swiss. Replaced by Yakin at the break.
Derdiyok - 6: Threatening first half performance but should have scored from
a close range header. Looked nervous when in decent positions.
Nkufo - 5: Worked hard but was guilty of wasting two glorious opportunities
late in the first half. Sacrificed for Frei in the second half.
Substitutes
Yakin - 7: Made a real difference to the Swiss attack. Had the Hondurans in
real trouble and could have had a penalty but stayed on his feet when
Figueroa pulled him back.
Frei - 5: Quite obviously not fit. Failed to make an impact.
Shaqiri - 6: Hitzfeld's last throw of the dice but never really got involved
as Honduras finished the better.
HONDURAS
Valladares - 6: One excellent save from Frei wasn't needed as the flag went
up. Otherwise he had little to do.
Bernardez - 6.5: Coped with the threat of Nkufo quite well but for two headed
chances in the first half. His job was made easier by the introduction of
Frei.
Chavez - 7: Solid defensive performance. Restricted Switzerland to shots from
distance with some last-ditch challenges.
Figueroa - 5.5: Struggled to cope with the overlapping threat of Lichtsteiner
but was by no means disgraced. Yakin worked him hard in the second half.
Sabillon - 6.5: Battled hard against Fernandes in the first half and did well
in the second forcing the Swiss to probe the opposite wing.
Alvarez - 6.5: Excellent effort and the best threat Honduras had in the final
third. Forced a fantastic save out of Benaglio which is more than can be said
for most of his team-mates.
Wilson Palacios - 7: Honduras' driving force throughout. Worked his socks off
trying to get them on the front foot in the first half and gradually created
space by wearing down a superior midfield.
Thomas - 6.5: A burly midfield presence. Conceded a number of needless free
kicks but the Swiss failed to take advantage.
Nunez - 5.5: Neat in possession but a number of stray passes ended some
promising build-up from his side. Replaced by Martinez in the second half.
Jerry Palacios - 6: Well-timed bursts of pace on the break stretched the
Swiss on a number of occasions but quality in finishing was sorely lacking.
Suazo - 6: Plenty of effort but his woeful miss on 53 minutes typified his
sides lack of fire power in Group H.
Substitutes
Martinez - 6: First change from Reinaldo Rueda added fresh legs to their
attack but made no difference in terms of quality.
Welcome - 5.5: Failed to make much of a difference to the Honduran effort.
Turcios: N/A: Little time to make an impact but had a glaring late miss.
