CHILE
Bravo – 5: Unnecessarily rushed off his line to clear a harmless Xabi Alonso
long ball and his tame clearance trickled straight to Villa.
Medel – 7.5: Very adventurous going forward but never neglected his
defensive duties. Even made a few crucial interceptions to cut out Spain’s
menacing through balls. The best of an often untamed Chilean backline.
Ponce – 6: An unnecessary lash-out at Fernando Torres off the ball will see
him suspended for the next game. Continued to be extremely reckless with his
challenges for the remainder of the match but like the rest of his
team-mates, made vital interceptions.
Jara – 5.5: Poor control gifted possession to Spain who duly pounced by
hammering in the killer second goal. Gave the ball away cheaply a few times
after that but atoned for that with a few important challenges.
Isla – 6.5: Played his part in dropping to defence to make vital tackles.
Roamed all across the midfield line to win possession for his side and press
the Spanish attackers.
Estrada – 4: Unfortunate to be sent off for an accidental trip on Torres,
but he had committed too many fouls prior to his dismissal.
Vidal – 6.5: Made a pivotal challenge on Torres towards the end of the first
half. Always stuck to the flanks to provide width for the team.
Mark Gonzalez – 6: Dropped back deep often to help out his left-back and
double team the likes of Sergio Ramos. Looked menacing at the start but
disappeared from the game. Sacrificed at half-time.
Alexis Sanchez – 7: Drifted in and out of the game. Wasn’t allowed the
luxury to bamboozle the opposition like he did in the first two games but
easily the most dangerous player for his side.
Valdivia – 5: Isolated upfront as nothing came through the middle. Replaced
at half-time.
Beausejour – 6: Made a lively start with his bursting runs down the flanks.
Could have equalised for his side through a lightning counter-attack if it
wasn’t for Pique’s last-ditch block.
Substitutes:
Paredes – 6: Brought in to plug any holes in midfield after Estrada’s
sending off.
Millar – 6.5: Made an instant impact by pulling a goal back two minutes into
the second half but quickly faded away.
Orellana – N/A
SPAIN
Casillas – 6: Only had a couple of saves to make in the first half. Unlucky
to be beaten for Chile’s consolation goal after Millar’s shot deflected off
Pique.
Sergio Ramos – 7.5: Showed great strength and discipline to keep track of
Beausejour in the first half. Had more freedom to roam forward once Chile
where down to ten men and he didn’t disappoint with his marauding runs.
Puyol – 6.5: Always in command of his area and marshalled his defence well
when Chile were attacking. Too slow to close down Millar, however, for Chile’
s goal.
Pique – 8: Made an all-important tackle to deny Beausejour on the
counter-attack, which subsequently led to Spain’s second goal. Comfortable
on the ball.
Capdevila – 6: Kept busy as he had to shackle Sanchez and often needed help
from a team-mate to contain the tricky Chilean winger.
Xavi – 6: Rarely allowed time on the ball as he struggled to get into the
game. Misplaced a few passes early on but once he was given room, he began to
orchestrate the Spanish attacks. Not one of his best games.
Busquets – 6: Had to bear the brunt of a number of fierce tackles whenever
he won the ball as he tried to slow down the game. Didn’t make any glaring
errors.
Xabi Alonso – 7.5: Dropped deep in the first half when his side were under
immense pressure and was always present in the box to help defend. Supplied
the long ball out of defence that led to the opening goal.
Iniesta – 8: Involved in almost every Spanish attack. Started the move for
the second goal and finished it with the most clinical of strikes. Showed
great control of the ball to draw out and take on players.
Torres – 4: Did not look fit at all as he was on walking pace for most of
the 54 minutes he was on the pitch.
Villa – 8: Barely had a look-in in the opening phases but took the one small
opportunity he had with aplomb with a precise 30-yard chip. Followed that up
by providing the assist for the second goal. Had two excellent chances in
front of goal in the second half.
Substitutes:
Fabregas – 6.5: Made two defence-splitting passes immediately after coming
on. Spurned a chance himself late on with a miscue.
Javi Martinez – 6: Despite being deployed as a defensive midfielder, he
spent most of his time lurking just outside the Chilean goal. Rarely troubled
defensively.
