DJALMINHA: "DIEGO TRISTAN IS THE BEST SPANISH STRIKER"

11th February 2003 -- Brazilian star Djalminha of Deportivo has been loaned
out to Austrian club Austria Memphis this season but has a training period
with his current club in Marbella. The midfielder spoke to Spanish
sportspaper Marca about how he sees Deportivo at this moment and his own
future at the club.
How do you now see your departure from Deportivo?
Good, as I wanted to leave and I achieved it. The club helped me with finding
a new destination and an interesting project.
You are loaned out, but will you return?
Now it’s too soon to say something about it. Austria is going fine as we’re
first in the League table and therefore we could reach Champions League
football. And that won’t be the same as playing it with a bigger club.
Who’s your favourite to win this season’s Champions League?
AC Milan has a very compact team, but Real Madrid have players who can decide
matches at any moment.
And what about Deportivo?
They’re as always. They have a good squad and are fighting to be at the top,
but since I left I only have seen them as a supporter.
How’s your relationship with Irureta now?
It’s like it was before, with all the good and bad in it. But because we
don’t work together anymore people don’t speak about it.
People speak a lot about Tristan these days.
These are all lies and excuses of people. Diego is a great player, the best
Spanish striker there is and a great friend of mine. And what he wants to do
outside the pitch is of his private business.
And what did you know about Molina?
I was very sad when hearing about his disease because he’s a great colleague.
Even Lendoiro missed you want Valeron sustained injuries...
The fact that the president mentioned it means there’s recognition for all
that I have done for Depor. But it’s sad to hear about those injuries,
especially because of the way they were sustained. I have talked with
Valeron about it.
How’s football in Austria?
There are possibilities here, but the press only seems interested in skiing.
Some time ago I was asked by another Brazilian what I was doing here.

Some things lighten nightfall
and make a Rembrandt of a grief.
But mostly the swiftness of time
is a joke; on us. The flame-moth
is unable to laugh. What luck.
The myths are dead.
