Andy will play to clinch the victory as USA takes a 2-1 lead

Bob and Mike Bryan gave the USA a 2-1 lead in their first round Davis Cup tie
against Romania. It was the twins’ eighth Davis Cup victory and it has given
the USA the advantage going into the final day’s singles.
The American duo had won the first set 6-2, when Victor Hanescu of Romania had
to retire thus forfeiting the match to the USA. Hanescu was struggling with a
left rib injury and couldn’t continue forcing the Romanian team to retire.
The Romanian number one, who is due to play Andy Roddick on Sunday, went to
the hospital for an MRI after the match. Captain, Florin Segarceanu, remains
hopeful he will be fit to play.
“We have to see how he feels tomorrow morning when he wakes up, but at this
point it doesn’t seem to be too many chances he will play. At this moment, I
’m hoping, I’m praying, he gets better tomorrow.”
Despite his on court illness problems, Andy has declared himself ready for
tomorrow’s match up, regardless of whether Hanescu will play. After his
match on Friday, Andy spent two hours on an intravenous drip to get
re-hydrated and is determined to get back on court and give the USA the
rubber they need on Sunday.
“I’m going to play. We’re going to do everything in our power. I’m going
to go. We don’t have any other option. Yeah, I’m going to go. I’m going to
try to take the best attitude possible throughout and really try to get
through it and try to get a win on Sunday. I think that will make a day like
today (Friday) forgotten in a lot of minds, including my own. I’d love to
get out there”
Andy and Hanescu have played once before in Paris Bercy in 2003, where Andy
won. Captain Patrick McEnroe is confident Andy will be able to repeat that
victory tomorrow and put the USA into the quarter finals of the 2006 Davis
Cup. “We look forward to seeing Andy back on the court tomorrow and we hope
to close it out.”
If Hanescu is unable to play, the two alternates would be Razvan Sabau and
Horia-Vlad Tecau ranked 112 and 443 in the world respectively. The match will
be played first tomorrow, with play beginning at 11am (local time) 2:00pm
(Eastern.)
The latest report from our ar.com onsite reporter is that Andy had a 45
minute late afternoon hit. The good news is that he was in good spirits
(nothing unusual for Andy!) and that the all too familiar “Crack” was heard
when he served.
