Dmitry Tursunov: a man without a country

FROM THE US OPEN – For a kid who has just pulled off the biggest win of his
young career, 20-year-old Russian Dmitry Tursunov is displaying the
even-keeled calm of a seasoned veteran after outlasting No. 14 seed Gustavo
Kuerten in nail-biting 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 first-round upset at the US
Open. It was the first-ever five-setter for Tursunov, who was born in Moscow
but has lived in the US since he was 12.

"My main concern was not to treat it as a match against Kuerten, but to treat
it as just another match," says Tursunov, reclining on a massage table
following the two-hour, 47-minute stunner. "Whether I won or lost, I was
going to get some positives out of it. I kind of talked myself into thinking
it was just another match."

Tursunov burst onto the scene in 2001 when he upset Greg Rusedski in Memphis
en route to the semis, where he fell to eventual titlist Mark Philippoussis.
But an oft-misdiagnosed back injury soon slowed his progress. By Indian
Wells, he says he was in so much pain that he couldn't even laugh. By the end
of the year, he says he couldn't even walk straight.

FRACTURES BREAK HIS DEVELOPMENT
As a result, Tursunov was sidelined for much of 2002. He says he didn't pick
up a racket for one seven-month stretch. CAT scans later revealed two
fractures, most likely caused by over-rotation. Few believed he could rebound
from such a setback with his booming serve and ferocious forehand intact,
Tursunov managed to climb back onto the Challenger circuit, where he has
managed to snare a few titles.

"He's a talented player," says super-coach Jose Higueras who has worked on
and off with Tursunov and has also coached Michael Chang, Jim Courier and
Pete Sampras and works with the USTA. "He's a little temperamental when he's
out there, but obviously he's strong. He's got power, which is important."

"I do have a lot of weapons, but they misfire a lot," confessed Tursunov, who
is based out of the Gorin Tennis Academy in Granite Bay, Calif., where he was
formerly coached by Vitaly Gorin. "I've had the weapons all along, but the
problem is trying to figure out how to use them. I knew how to hit the ball,
but I didn't know how to play tennis. It's sad, but it's true. Now I've
calmed down on the court and I don't go for so many flashy shots. I do what's
necessary."

READY TO BECOME AN AMERICAN
In many respects, Tursunov is a man without a country.

"I never really thought of myself as fully Russian or fully American," he
says. "I was Russian, but then I left for a year and everyone was calling me
an American. When I came back to America, everyone was calling me a Russian.
It's a different position to be in."

我從來沒想過自己到底是個俄國人或者美國人。我是俄國人，但我回去一年，每個人都
說我是美國人。當我回到了美國，大家又說我是俄國人了，這是不同的處境。


His father, Igor, taught him the game in his native homeland, but he was all
but ignored by the Russian Tennis Federation. Currently awaiting his US
citizenship, until recently, he hasn't exactly been hotly pursued by the
USTA, either.

他父親是Igor，小時候在家鄉教他打球。但Dima卻被俄羅斯網球協會完全忽略，他等待
著能申請美國公民。但直到最近，他還是沒受到太多USTA的關注。


"I was frustrated with both federations. When ever you need help, there is no
help. Whenever you're doing well, people will offer you help," he confides.
"It's like that in anything, not just tennis. In an ideal world, you would
have a federation watching over you, pick players up early and lead them
along."

「我對於這情況感覺蠻沮喪的。當你需要幫助時，偏偏就沒有。當你打出好成績時，
他們才會幫助你。」他透露著心聲。「好像在很多事都是如此，不只是網球。我覺得在

Tursunov, who came into the Open ranked No. 174 and has yet to win an ATP
title, takes on Dutchman John van Lottum in the second round. Although he was
down a break in the fifth against Kuerten, Tursunov says he never lost his
focus.

美網之後，他的排名來到了174但還沒有贏過ATP賽事的冠軍。他在美網第二輪擊敗了荷

"One thing that Jose told me that has made a big impact on my game is that
you can only control what you're doing, not what the other person is doing,"
said Tursunov, who described himself as coachless. "Whether you have a goal
in mind, whether you want to make money or whatever, you have to keep your
eyes on what you can control and the rest will come along."

「Jose教我很重要的一件事並且對我有很大的影響，那就是你只可以掌握你正在做
的事，而不是其他人。」

「為了你心中的理想也好，為了賺錢或者其他目標，反正你必須鎖定在那些你可以掌

On kid's day, one kid is wistful

You are Dmitry Tursunov! You have just won the first ATP match of your
career! When are you going to call your father back in Moscow and give him
the great news?

嗨 Dmitry Tursunov！你贏了在ATP的第一場勝利。

"I'm never calling him," says Tursunov.

「我絕不會打給他。」

Never?

絕不？

"We've had some ugly times, fights and everything."

「我們共有的記憶不怎麼愉快，吵架啦─就那些父子間會有的爭執。」

"He always tries to butt in."

Well. O.K. What's his first name, again?

"Igor," he says. "As in Frankenstein."

So there you have it, tennis fans. Another child tennis prodigy, another
happy family.
They opened the Kroger St. Jude tennis tournament this week with something
called Kid's Day. Hundreds of smiling kids packed the place. One reason they
might have been smiling was this: Their parents didn't make them grow up to
be tennis players.

在Kid's Day裡，好幾百個洋溢天真笑容的小孩子聚在一起。而使得他們能夠保持如此
笑容的理由就是─他們爸媽不會逼他們當網球選手。


This is the flip side of the sport. This is the part you hear about too
often.

And Dmitry Tursunov, maybe the next great Russian player, winner of 16
consecutive matches overall, basks in his first tour victory _ 6-2, 6-4 over
Kevin Kim _ by unloading on his father, who really is named Igor.

而Dima則可能是下一個俄羅斯絕佳好手，他在ATP職業賽的第一場勝利打敗了Kevin Kim
透露了自己的心事關於他父親Igor

"He targeted me," Tursunov said. "He made me the scapegoat."

Tursunov is as perfectly cheery as he says this. He's an engaging kid, just
18, and he seems about as Russian as Justin Timberlake.

He drives a black Corvette. He thinks Napster is "the best." He has been in
the United States for six years, makes jokes about the KGB and borrows his
coach's laptop to play video games.

But Tursunov makes it perfectly clear that he didn't choose tennis anymore
than he chose his cascading blond hair, his cool blue eyes.

"You don't realize what your dad can do to you when he gets you on the tennis
court," he says. "He targeted me."

「你不明白當你父親為了要你去網球場上會做出些什麼。他要我完成他的目標。」


By the time he was 5, Tursunov was playing serious tennis. By the time he was
9, he was traveling "non-stop" to tennis tournaments. By the time he was 12,
he had been shipped off to work with a coach in California.

當他五歲的時候，他就很認真的練習網球。九歲時他就馬不停蹄地在網球賽事中來回。
十二歲時，他被送去加州和教練一起打網球。

Tursunov didn't go to school. He couldn't speak English. He played tennis
five hours a day. Period.

他沒有去上學，他還不會說英文，那段期間他一天打五個小時的網球。

Did he ever want to quit?

那時他有想過停止打網球嗎？

"Every day."

「每一天。」

Why didn't he?

為什麼他不行？

"There was no point in arguing," he says. "(My father) would always win
because he's bigger."

Who were his friends in California?

那時候在加州誰是他的朋友？

"For the first year and a half, I didn't have any."

在一開始的一年半裡，我一個朋友也沒有。

The surprising thing, really, is how well all this could yet turn out.
最讓人驚訝的是，這些都轉成了好的結果。

Tursunov seems to have adjusted to his new life in California. He has
girlfriends. He says things like "stoked."

Dima看來很適應加州的新生活，他有女朋友，他熱情洋溢。

His future as a tennis player is limitless.

他的網球生涯是不可限量的。

But on the day of his first tour victory, a day he had been pushed or working
toward for more than a decade, you wished the kid could have sounded more
convinced the tradeoffs had been worth it.

但在贏得職業賽第一場勝利這天，為了這一天他努力了十幾年。你會希望這孩子聽起來
能夠有說服力─這一切會是值得。

"No regrets," he said, with a shrug. "Really."

「不後悔。」他聳聳肩「真的！」
