Post-Season Briefing 2015/16 – part one

With a summer of international action on the horizon and a fresh season to
follow, it is time to wave goodbye to the Chelsea campaign just completed,
summed up here by those who previewed and chronicled it throughout, club
historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton…

First the bad news. The 2015/16 season matched Chelsea's lowest Premier
League points haul of 50 in 1995/96 and worst finishing position (10th)
since the same season (11th). The team conceded more than 50 goals in a
campaign for the first time since 1996/97, and did not qualify for Europe
for the only time since that year.

At the point in mid-December Jose Mourinho left the club for the second
time, the champions had played 16 matches, winning four, drawing three and
losing nine – four of them at Stamford Bridge. One of those was against
Bournemouth, the Cherries becoming the first newly-promoted side to beat
the Blues for 14 years.

Eleven further top-flight games were played at the Bridge, producing just
one further loss, but eight draws and two wins, against the
relegation-threatened north-east teams Sunderland and Newcastle (the 5-1
victory was our one league win at the Bridge in the last 10).

Only four teams opened the scoring more times than Chelsea, who managed it
in 20 of the 38 league games, and at any stage in matches the Blues took
the lead on 24 occasions. Yet the team was pegged back after 12 of those
goals. Oddly, nine of the 14 were at home and just three in 10 on the road.

It was at Stamford Bridge where the defending champions' fall was most
dramatic. The Blues failed to keep a clean sheet in 84 per cent of league
games at our stadium, did not win any of the last five, and conceded at
least one goal in each of the last 12, since Norwich City visited on 21
November.

Restoring the fortress on the Fulham Road will naturally be a priority for
incoming head coach Antonio Conte, but the fans can play a big part in the
restoration too.

Travelling Blues supporters have often seen the better parts of the
season, with some home/away splits quite telling: 48%/52% of points
gained; 54%/46% goals scored; 57%/43% goals conceded.

Twenty-eight of the home goals conceded came in the last 15 minutes of
each half, evenly split by first and second period.

One positive was the starts to matches: the Blues were the only side never
to concede in the opening 15 minutes, notching up nine strikes without
reply. Chelsea also set the longest unbeaten run by any league side this
season, stretching to 15 without loss between December and March.

Thanks to late equalisers at the Bridge, we can still extend the two
longest unbeaten home runs against Premier League opponents by any club:
Everton (21 games) and Tottenham (24).

Eden Hazard's strike against Spurs (which can be viewed below) was his
first in the league at home for 365 days and the winner against Crystal
Palace, meaning his goals decided the title twice, a year apart.

Tottenham's nine yellow cards in that 2-2 at the Bridge represented 13 per

Hazard's brilliant solo effort at Anfield ensured Liverpool failed to keep
a clean sheet for the ninth successive league game against Chelsea.

The Blues also beat London rivals Arsenal home and away, but had the
better of only one other side from the top half of the table: Southampton
at St Mary's.

There was a return of 16 goals for Diego Costa this campaign, meaning only

Fabregas, Ramires, Fernando Torres, Demba Ba, Paulo Ferreira, Petr Cech
and John Terry.

There was success again at other levels in the club. Development squads
retained the prestigious FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League. Young
prospects Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori, both attached to the Academy
since Under-8 level, and Jake Clarke-Salter who joined as an Under-9, were
rewarded with their senior debuts.

The Youth Cup triumph was particularly stunning as it meant Chelsea's crop
of youngsters became the first to win the trophy three times in succession
since Manchester United's Busby Babes in the 1950s.

Chelsea Ladies also clinched a Women's FA Cup and Super League double with

were shifted worldwide in 2015/16 (3,102,000 units) than those of any club

Our total remuneration since the inception of the Premier League in
