How Malaysia beat the USA?
Was this an upset?
‘ Joe Slowinski
On paper, the USA women’s national team that represented the country at the
World Tenpin Bowling Association Women’s World Championships was stronger
than any other country. The team included 2005 World Cup Champion Lynda
Barnes, 2006 World Cup Champion Diandra Asbaty, 2005 WIBC Queens Champion
Tennelle Milligan, dual Bronze medalist at the 2006 World Youth Championships
Stephanie Nation and Shannon O’Keefe, Silver medalist at the 2005 Women’s
World Championship.
Shannon O’Keefe。
All of us involved in bowling were expecting something big from the U.S.
national team. And, they didn’t disappoint…with a medal in every event,
something an American team had not accomplished since 1971.
But, this powerhouse team settled for a silver medal in the team event
losing by just seven pins. Instead of the paper favorite, the national
team of a small Southeast Asian nation of 25 million won the gold medal,
pulling off an upset over a team of superstars from a country of 300
million. For a small country, this is a major accomplishment. The next
day, the front page of all of the national papers in Malaysia, read,
”We are World Champions!”
But, how did they do that? The USA team was so strong. How could a small
country win Gold over this team of stars?
Malaysia is one of a handful of countries around the world that actually
treats bowling as a sport. Fully funded from the government, Malaysia
competes in the Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games, Asian Indoor Games and
periodically, when bowling is included, the Commonwealth Games.
Accordingly, due to this resource support, I will contend that the Malaysian
program is the strongest on the planet. Bowlers bowl together every day.
Financial support insures the bowlers can simply eat, sleep and bowl. They
don’t need to worry about also having a full-time job to make a living.
How many BTM readers would love that lifestyle?
The National Sports Council of Malaysia budgets millions of dollars to
provide support for tenpin bowling. All the way from a fully funded youth
development program with more that 1700 elite youth bowlers to paid monthly
stipends providing salaries for the national team members.
With a fully funded program, bowlers are provided with access to
nutritionists, daily fitness training, funding for equipment and daily
on-lane training. So, the national team members in Malaysia are full-time
athletes. This financial support has led to Malaysian bowling becoming one
of the most successful sports in the country. Bowlers here are known by
their first name and appear in the paper on a near daily basis.
These bowlers compete year round, funded to many big Open events. If the
player wins, they also get to keep the winnings. If bowlers win a medal
at an international competition, they earn tens of thousands of dollars in
government incentives. So, in addition to a monthly salary, bowlers can earn
a nice living. In many ways, these athletes are professional athletes.
Collectively, this creates success on the regional and international level.
At the last Asian Games, bowling was the most successful sport for Malaysia,
earning 6 medals. More than 50 nations competed in this Olympic-like event,
held every four years. Of the 42 medals earned by Malaysians, at the 2006
Asian Games, the bowling team won three Gold and three Silvers. With success,
comes funding from the government. Although bowling is not an Olympic sport,
the government funds howling and a few other sports equal to Olympic sport
funding. Now, that is a good sign for bowling.
In the process of winning the team Gold, Malaysia broke the women’s 6-game
world championship team scoring record. The USA would settle for the silver
with the second best performance ever. Malaysia now has the first and third
best team performances in the team event. Their performance in 2003 at the
World Championships was the previous record.
So, in closing, was this really an upset? Malaysian women’s teams
have two of the three best scratch scores in the history of the world’s
championships. The winners of the 15th Asian Games Gold Medal in the
Team Event are the world champions again, for the second time in three
events.
The fact remains that Malaysia is able to have a true national team program.
With this level of resource and knowledge support, I don’t think it is that
surprising that they won the Gold medal.
