CONOR CLIFFORD EXTENDS

.... Today, the 20-year-old was a starter in a reserve friendly against
Gillingham at Cobham, in which Dermot Drummy's side emerged 5-4 winners
after a thrilling second half.


Jacob Mellis put the Blues in front early on with a deflected effort, and
George Saville quickly doubled the lead when he headed home a Rohan Ince
cross.


Debutant Patrick Bamford had an effort well saved after 20 minutes, and
then saw his penalty appeal waved away after being brought down in the
area by the visiting goalkeeper.


Gillingham pulled one back just after the break but Chelsea could have
redoubled the lead shortly afterwards when the two Cliffords combined at a
free-kick, Conor feeding Billy to square across the box where Saville hit
the post before sub Reece Mitchell saw his effort blocked off.

Bamford scores his first for Chelsea


Chelsea did get a third when schoolboy substitutes Jeremy Boga and
Mitchell combined with some excellent interplay on the edge of the Gills
box, and Bamford netted his first goal in Chelsea colours shortly
afterwards, rounding off a tidy team move.


The Gills were not done however and quickly went about getting back into
the game, completing an astonishing comeback to level the scores within
five minutes.


Bamford then put Chelsea back in front, making it 5-4 from the penalty
spot before Billy Clifford's shot was saved by the Gillingham keeper, but
the visitors had a golden opportunity before the end to level, a free
header sent well over the bar when a goal looked the likely outcome.
