Centre court snub at US Open spurred Sam Stosur

A MAIDEN major title wasn't the only first Sam Stosur notched in New York
this year.Until the US Open, Stosur had never marched into the tournament
director's office and demanded answers either.

But on the eve of her break-out victory over Serena Williams, the mild-mannered
Aussie reached boiling point.For the third consecutive match, prevaricating
officials scratched a scheduled appearance on centre court.

So instead of her semi-final against Angelique Kerber being held before
25,000 fans in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Stosur was shunted to an outside court to
accommodate late changes to the rain-affected event.

The result was farcical. Only a few hundred people watched Stosur qualify for
her second grand slam final - an occasion and achievement not befitting of
such an insulting backdrop.

And Stosur, 27, wasn't afraid to tell the powerbrokers as much.

"It was the first time I've ever knocked on the tournament director's door,"
she said this week. "I don't think I held back too much on how I felt.

"I don't think it was anything personal against me, but the circumstances
weren't handled too well.

"I was the one that got the rough end of the stick every single time.

"Right from my fourth round to the final, there was constant disagreements
and arguments about scheduling.

"I'm not silly. I'm not saying I deserve to be out on centre court every
single match.

"But it was a semi-final of the US Open. At some point you've got to look at
that and say, 'It's a semi-final no matter what the names are - it's huge'.

"I deserved to be there (centre court)."

Sam 說，這是她第一次跑到賽會總監那裡抗議，她不覺得有誰故意和她做對，
而是賽會方應變上的疏失，只是每次她都很衰地遭到不公平待遇，從第四輪到
決賽，很多選手對賽程安排都有意見，她也不是天真地認為，自己應該每回都
進中央球場打球，不過在她的心中，四強賽的意義還是有點不一樣，不管名單
是誰。

These raw sentiments reveal the self-belief and confidence that flourished
within Stosur at Flushing Meadows.She not only stood up to the suits, but also
the doubters.

記者先生覺得，也是這股信念及信心，讓Sam在決賽爆發奪冠。

Stosur's devastating French Open final loss to Francesca Schiavone a year
earlier had cemented claims that she lacked the mental fortitude to withstand
high-pressure situations.

去年法網決賽失利，外界更認定了她缺乏心理素質的事實。


Then came the US Open final on September 11. It was the 10th anniversary of
the 9-11 attacks and the turnpikes leading to Arthur Ashe Stadium were laden
with SUVs carrying wreaths in honour of the fallen.

Inside the cauldron, the all-American crowd swelled with passion as tributes
flowed.And when the combatants emerged, the throng then channelled their
emotions in raucous support of Stosur's opponent - hometown hero Williams.

決賽當天，正巧是美國遭911恐怖攻擊滿十週年，通往 A.A.球場的公路上，勢必
有擁擠車潮，車廂內載著悼念的花環。球場內，美國群眾充滿激情地默哀，待選

In the eyes of some American commentators, Stosur was merely an extension of
the pre-match program. A formality.But the big-talking Americans had no idea
what was going on beneath the surface.

Within Arthur Ashe Stadium and Stosur herself, a calm sense of destiny was
unfolding.The type of composure only years of hard work and brutal experience
can produce.

"I had no doubt in my mind I could do it," Stosur said. "The big lead-up, the
warm-up and the time you're having lunch, down time ... all that was just
perfect and I did everything the way I wanted it to be."

Without any hesitation whatsoever, Stosur credits her assured mindset to the
Roland Garros disaster.

"No doubt I wouldn't have been able to go out and do what I did in New York
if I hadn't experienced what happened in Paris," she said. "That huge
disappointment and learning curve definitely helped me.

Sam說，當時她對取勝沒有絲毫疑惑，大幅度地領先，賽前暖身、澳洲剛好是

照著她想要的方式進行。

"I definitely felt the pressure to win. On paper I was the favourite and I
had this great record against (Schiavone).

"I don't think I ever let myself be free and be loose. Top players always go
through those emotions but they get better and better at handling them and
that's why they stay at the top."

Now the unrivalled face of Australian tennis, the world No.6 won't be on the
end of any centre court snubs at Melbourne Park next month.

Satisfying enormous local expectations by reaching the quarter-finals for the
first time Down Under will be a new challenge for Stosur.

"I think I can definitely do better in Melbourne and it's not the conditions
or the court that have been against me," she said. "I know third round isn't
somewhere I want to go out."

她回憶起去年法網決賽的情景，自己感受到求勝的壓力，報紙上寫著她
是最被看好奪冠，對夏鳳的交戰記錄也有優勢。

" 我在場上無法放鬆自在。頂尖選手們都經歷那樣的情緒，但搞定好這
