YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 0 CHARLTON ATHLETIC 0
Posted on: Sat 24 Mar 2012
Youth team manager Adi Viveash selected a very young side, giving a chance
to members of his squad who have seen less league action this season and
involving six schoolboys in the match.
The goalkeepers were kept busy in the game played at Cobham and the
visitors began brightly, with a spell of early pressure that saw Blues
goalkeeper Jamal Blackman (pictured) tested inside the opening minutes.
Pressing the hosts' defence in the early exchanges, Charlton midfielder
Kasey Palmer fired an early effort at Blackman, before striker Tobi
squandered one of the best chances of the matches. Latching onto a through
ball, the striker's attempt to push it past the Blues' keeper rolled
inches wide of the near post.
Minutes later, the visitors again found themselves in behind the Chelsea
defence. In an identical opening to that missed by Tobi minutes earlier,
Adebayo Azeez pushed his effort past Blackman and past the post to keep
the match goalless. Azeez would later test the Chelsea 'keeper when moving
in from the right flank, his powerful effort was well blocked as the Blues
saw out a difficult first 30 minutes.
Looking to impose themselves on the game later in the half, the hosts
pressed forward with the our Under 15s midfielder Jeremie Boga at the
heart of the action. He made a strong run through midfield before his low
effort from distance was held by Phillips in the Charlton goal.
As the Blues' pressure continued, Lewis Baker also tested the visiting
goalkeeper, unleashing a fierce long-range drive, which bounced off the
Charlton 'keeper. However, as the first 45 minutes drew to a close,
Blackman was again the busier of the two goalkeepers, quick off his line
to claim a low through ball ahead of the on-rushing Azeez to keep the
scores level at the interval.
After the restart, Blackman was again called upon, as the visitors looked
to expose any space behind the Chelsea defence, with the Blues keeper
quick off his line to relieve the pressure from the Charlton attack.
Feeling the effects of a foot injury, Blackman was withdrawn on 65
minutes, replaced by Mitchell Beeney.
With the hosts looking brighter after the interval, Chelsea showed some
strong build-up play, with the pace of Blues winger Ismail Seremba a
threat from the left-hand side. Meanwhile, Boga and Baker, as in the first
half, again threatened the Charlton goal with the latter coming closest
with the hosts' best chance of the match.
Running into the penalty area, Baker latched onto Tom Howard's pass but
the midfielder's initial effort was blocked by Phillips, before his lofted
follow-up dropped agonisingly onto the roof of the net.
In the closing stages of the match, Boga again threatened, showing
excellent footwork to create an opening, before firing his effort at
Phillips. However, the visitors would come close in the final minute, with
Addicks left-back Morgan Fox pushing forward. His over-hit cross dipped
dangerously across the Chelsea goal, grazing the far post as the match
ended goalless.
Having fielded a side from across the Academy sides, manager Adi Viveash
was pleased with his young side's display: 'We always knew it would be
tough. We're very young, they had some young players on show as well. I
thought it was a great advertisement for youth football.
'I'm really pleased with some of the performances from the players that
don't always grab the headlines.'
