YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 0 ASTON VILLA 0
Posted on: Sat 31 Mar 2012
Chances were few and far between in a competitive yet clean encounter that
saw both defences well organised.
Villa started the brighter and Charlie Ward bent a free-kick just wide of
the Chelsea post inside the first couple of minutes, before forward Daniel
Williams headed tamely at Mitchell Beeney as Chelsea started sluggishly.
It took the Blues fully 30 minutes to fashion a shooting opportunity, this
owing as much to Villa's organisation as Chelsea's lack of cohesion.
The home side had threatened once or twice with some fine passing moves
before James Ashton released Amin Affane down the left, his guided cross
finding Islam Feruz 12 yards out, but the striker could not find a clean
connection and shot high and wide.
At the other end it took a Sam Bangura interception to prevent the
visitors having a simple opportunity, before Affane sent a wickedly
bending free-kick onto the Villa post.
Just before half-time, Villa could have gone in front when Chelsea gave
the ball away cheaply, Williams's cross just evading his strike partner,
then Beeney had to dive full length to keep out Ward's effort and from the
resulting corner Janoi Denacien headed over via the crossbar.
Adi Viveash made two changes to his Chelsea side at the break, with the
fresh legs of Walter Figueira and Ismail Seremba (pictured) replacing
Feruz and Anjur Osmanovic, with Affane dropping deeper into a central
role.
Beeney was called into action again shortly into the second half, pushing
a Lewis Kinsella free-kick over, and later on saved easily from Clark
Watkins, as Chelsea spent periods on the back foot.
Figueira and Lewis Baker combined well for Chelsea but could find no way
through a resilient visiting defence.
Into the final few minutes Adam Nditi crossed for Seremba, but the
forward's route to goal was blocked by some committed defending that
seemed to sum the game up perfectly.
Roberto Di Matteo will have been hoping the first team could provide a
little more threat at Villa Park in the afternoon's reverse fixture in the
Barclays Premier League.
